2020 Metric Century Challenge

Time to start thinking about the Metric Century Challenge for 2020!
The challenge is very straightforward: all you need to do is ride one metric century, a ride of 100 km (62.18 miles) each and every month during 2020. Riding one a month is enough but why not set yourself a target to aim for? Get out and ride as many as you can! If 100km isn't long enough then why not try to do a double-century every month?
The guidelines are:
* Click 'reply to post' to add yourself to the list of participants before 31st January 2020. Please don't post until you have a ride or are sure you will have one. It will save me some time every month if there aren't any extraneous posts.
* Post only once per participant and edit your original post after each ride, please update your rides by the last day of each month in something along these lines:
Jan 15th, 100kms, 62.18 miles, 1 point, total kms 100, total points 1... and then as you do each ride edit the same post doing a running total of kms and points. Some people don't put the miles in, some put elevation in... whatever floats your boat, but please do keep your points totals up to date.. It just saves me having to go through and add them all up each time.
* Complete your first ride by 31 Jan 2020. No late starters or double rides to catch up after 31 January 2020.
* Ride one metric century each and every month.
* Each Metric Century is worth one point. Double metrics (200km) are worth two points and so on.
* For brevet rides or anything similar lasting longer than one continuous day, the date the ride completed is the date posted. (Your post would look something like this: 10 May 4 Points 403.29 km Total Points 14 Total kms 1,429.76)
Jan 15th, 104.3 kms, 1 point. Total 1 point.
Feb 26th 102 kms, 1 point. Total 2 points.

Welcome back to returning riders and hello and welcome to new additions to the MCC peloton. Cruff starts the new year as he finished the old, with Svetty in hot pursuit. A trio of riders are on his tail with everyone else strung out behind.
Ride hard and be safe, spring will be here soon :-)

As you were at the head of the field with one notable exception as Dead Calm drops out of joint third place. CarbonClem takes his place with everyone else except davep1 staying in for the next month. Stay safe everyone, and enjoy a few hours on the bike as self-isolation eh? :-)

Is this still carrying on as usual? I know we are allowed a 'daily exercise', but is 100k taking the piss? Should we inadvertantly encourage long rides that may lead to incidental contamination, or people riding further when perhaps that may be bad for them health wise if they have a mild case of Covid? Or am I over thinking it?
Thoughts anyone?2020/2021/2022 Metric Century Challenge Winner0 -
How is it taking the piss? I live on my own and have been working from home for weeks. I haven't been out of the house or had human contact with anyone (other than a walk to the shops to buy a loaf of bread and a pint of milk on Tuesday) for nine days. On my ride, I took a jam butty and a pork pie, and sat and ate them probably a quarter of a mile away from the nearest soul. I took two bidons so I didn't need to stop for water. I started and ended the ride at home, and encountered precisely nobody whilst I was out. I average around 400km a week throughout the year, and this was an endurance ride at less than 220w - so it's not putting me at risk of compromising my immune system.
In addition, there are far less cars on the road, so far less chance than normal of being hit by one - and the statistics on accidents show that the number of KSIs due to bike accidents where a car was not involved are infinitesimally small compared to the number that are due to DIY.
Whether everyone else is 'encouraged' to go out and do a 100km ride by this thread is up for comment, I guess - but unless cycling is banned completely (which it probably will be in the next few days) then the only argument against this ride seems to be 'you'll piss other people off'. If those other people are not in full possession of the facts, then frankly, there's not much I can do about that.Fat chopper. Some racing. Some testing. Some crashing.

I'm with Cruff - I've done over 155 kms in the last 2 days and been overtaken by less than 20 vehicles, and I've been through a couple of towns and plenty of villages, plus riding on some A roads.
Far safer than doing some DIY or gardening!1 -
Yeah, I've cracked on. Solo riding, additional tools/food, familiar routes, giving others a wide berth and plain kit so my club jersey doesn't highlight me being too far from home!2020/2021/2022 Metric Century Challenge Winner1

Good on yer. There's a lot of absolute mince on soshul meedja about this - people trying to be all pious and virtue signalling without being in full possession of the facts. Normally about now I'd have stuck a couple of 150 milers in, but going that far from home would obviously be daft (and I'm not sure I could face cycling the same 20 mile loop eight times!) so I'm doing shorter rides than usual. Still see less people on the roads I ride than I do on the quarter of a mile walk to the shop I do once a week, and I'm much further away from then too.
And, in true ironic fashion, I've done my bloody back in today doing the vacuuming!Fat chopper. Some racing. Some testing. Some crashing.

Evening chaps, hope you are all keeping safe and well in these unfamiliar times. As I expected we've lost a few this month, those that remain have split into three groups: a four strong breakaway, four more in pursuit and the gruppetto.
Enjoy the quiet roads whilst you can and stay healthy :-)0 -
Quite - the facts are quite simple though aren't they, outside for exercise once a day. However, in the absence of a strict time limit the trouble comes when people put their own spin on what constitutes a reasonable amount of time exercising. IME on the local community page it seems to be the couch potatoes pontificating and telling everyone to stay indoors at all costs, I guess they're still sore that McDs and KFC are shut...cruff said:Good on yer. I haven't been doing this challenge for a couple of years now... what I would do right now is give a holiday, those who want to continue to do 100 km rides, can continue to score points, those who don't can still complete the challenge once all the restrictions are lifted... rides during this period are deferred and need to be completed at a later stage.... makes sense?left the forum March 20230

The current guidance to police in England is that exercising more than once a day is "likely to be reasonable" and no time limit is specified for the exercise. There is also no time limit given in the regs that the advice is based on.pollys_bott said:

I'm guided by the need to social distance. I limit myself to rides where I'm not going to meet many people, need the loo, buy food or refill water bottles and deal with most foreseeable issues on the bike. This is up to 3 hours for me, unless I pack some decent food for a little meal break.0
