Hi,

Assuming a similar price point (about $100 separating them), and identical condition (basically new), which would you rather have: a 2010 S3 with SRAM Red or a 2012 S5 with SRAM Rival? Both have basic aluminum wheelsets.

Bike radar have reviews if you Google model and year.
I prefer the look of S3, looks like a 'normal' bike :)

I think I would be buying the frame rather than the groupset in your shoes.
  • I like the idea of picking up an older, higher spec’d bike, like one of this Cervelos. Perhaps I should suck it up and just get a newer Cannondale for just a little more cash. I need to replace my 20 year old R800 which is falling apart presently.

2020 Super Six 105 or one of the two bikes above?

Whatever floats your boat. What I mean is, let's say I've always wanted a caad 9 or a Klein or whatever. Doesn't matter what it comes with, if I found that frame that would be the thing I'd be buying, the rest I'd not worry about. Sell it, keep it if it's good, whatever.

its sram red - pro level components. still lighter and better looking and better functioining han most mechanicals and electric on the market.

    no need to change them.

S3 with (I would guess 10 speed) SRAM Red all day. I'm not sure what your paying but I'd pick this setup over a lot of modern bikes to be honest.

if they are coming from a proper Cervelo dealer and are new, can't see why not - just means they have sat in a warehouse for years unsold.

  • Of the two, I'd have the S3. I think it's a much nicer looking bike, but also the S3 has a threaded BB, whereas the S5 is BBright. Also I seem to remember that there were issues with the front tyre rubbing the underside of the downtube on the S5.

absolutely correct re rubbish bb on the S5. its utterly rubbish.

it is also restricted to 23s front and rear.

they are lovely though - quite miss mine.

  • Excellent info. Thanks you guys.

What if it were between the 2010 S3 with Red and a 2013 S5 with Ultrgra DI2? The 2013 is a bit more expensive.
  • What a nice problem to have , have to say the older cervelo still look great . I’d ditch my supersix for one

S3 all the way without a doubt or bat of an eyelid.

Thanks for the feedback. Why would you go for the S3 in this case?

Its lovely and a brilliant bike. Utterly cool. So is the S5 frameset.

Red is better than than 2012 Ultegra di2. Its a pro level Tour and everything else winning groupset that works just as wel as Di2.

if you want, you can change the Red to 11 speed just by changing the shifters - simple. I say change not upgrade because its not really an upgrade.

The Di2 is 7 years old so things like the battery will be shot, anything that needs replacing costs a fortune - SRAM cables (make sure you get 1.1mm SRAM cables) cost next to nothing.

Look at the Workshop section for all the Di2 hassles, and that on the S5 is already 7 years old ....

Red is lighter & looks nicer.

Its cheaper so you can spend that on some tubular 90s from Planet X/Farsport etc and make it epic.

I'm thinking the whole bike is lighter.

S5 has that stupid bllody bottom bracket. Its stupid

S5 seat post only accepts certain saddles (no carbon railed ones) and you can't change the seat clamps as no one makes them

The S5 is a cracking bike though.

    But that's just me.......

  • Both are black. I suppose any aero benefits of the S5 over the S3 should be disregarded [ducks]

    The S3 definitely looks better.
  • Ok. Decided to go for the S3. Crossing my fingers it will be awesome. It’s a 61 which should fit me well given that I’m 1.9m with a 890mm inseam.
