    Jerusalem Emerson, Lake and Palmer.
I was going to suggest Fanfare for the Common Man by the same band but I guess you can’t have an intro to an instrumental :D

It's their best track by a mile. I love it. Got some funky drumming on it too.

Perhaps but the bar was set so low that a worm couldn't have limboed under it!

We obviously have different views on what constitutes funky.

    Nuff said.

Has anyone said Imperium by Machine Head yet?

    Hear Me Now

Also, an underage ddraver would have said Closer by NIN because all you had to hear was the opening drums and the floor in the rock club - the club guaranteed never to ID - would empty and the stage would fill with equally underage mini-goths that would gyrate for the rest of the song in such a way that drove him crazy...
We're in danger of confusing passion with incompetence

If we’re going to discuss Edwin Starr then we can’t leave out ‘War’ one of the great intros!

On the subject of Northern Soul, for a great intro look no further than ‘So Is The Sun’ by World Column

I never could get So Is The Sun as a Northern record, I know Levine played it at the Highland Room but latterly he played anything with a beat in the name of Northern Soul.

I have a 12" of it and think I have played it once, just never did it for me. I think I would term it as "attempted funk"

Now the opening to this gets me right away.
