I’m struggling to see the point in buying yet another kitchen gadget to cook rice. I’m no chef but chucking some rice in a pan and boiling it doesn’t feel like it needs a fancy alternative. That said every Hello Fresh recipe seemed to involve cooking the rice a different way.

Brits have kettles and toasters. Other nationalities have rice cookers and no ovens.

Don't get me started on porridge! 50/50 Cup Jumbo oats and Rolled oats. Handful of raisins, spoon of coarse bran, good pinch of rock salt, cup of milk, cup of water. Microwaaavey to desired consistency. Allow to cool until firm texture. Milk on top to taste. Nice.
Sometimes. Maybe. Possibly.

Nope, no salt, no milk, just water.

Gruel then? No, not for me.

Watched The Scarlet Claw last night, a Sherlock Holmes film from the Basil Rathbone era.
The TV announcer beforehand gave a very solemn warning about the offensive content we could expect. The on screen notes also contained a warning for discriminatory material. Was expecting it to be full of black and white minstrels or something similar.
Having watched the whole film I have absolutely no idea what we were supposed to be offended about.

I knew porridge was a poor choice for analogy, because some people inexplicably find it interesting.

Look, do you know how to cook rice or not!?

I use the Jamie Oliver method.
2 mugs of boiling water to 1 mug of rice.
Boil gently until the water is gone.
Key is temperature. Should take about 12 mins. Boil too hard and water is gone but the rice is still hard

As this is pretty peak CS on a Monday morning, I thought (in the absence of RC), it needed a graph.

Milk and dried or fresh fruit added on top when cooked so gruel plus!

If you lot aren't careful, @First.Aspect will start a porridge thread.

There's far less porridge chat than coffee chat.

Coffee already has it's own thread. Forgotten about maybe but It is there.

If you can't cook rice in an air fryer, the facebook generation won't be interested.

Aren't the Facebook generation now what was previously the Saga generation i.e. over 50?

I was thinking over 60.

Ah yes, it doesn't include you!

Exactly 😀
I don't use facebook or an air fryer, but am gradually moving towards being air fryer compliant.
Maybe "the Nextdoor generation" would be more selective.

I remember the BBC ran a series of podcasts years ago called: should I worry about (or am I middle class enough to worry about). One of them was should I worry about rice and the conclusion was, maybe, if you're eating loads of it due to arsenic levels. The considered advice was that you might want to boil it in excessive amounts of water

On the other hand Phil Wang and his extended family are still here, and he's somehow made an entire career out of his rice eating habits.

True Please don't make any more helpful suggestions.

To square the circle: has anyone perfected fried rice in an air fryer? Seems to take 10 times the amount of time with less favourable results than a wok.

My simple philosophy is that an air fryer is only used for things that would normally go in an oven or grill.
Fried rice does not normally go in the oven or grill so...
