Oh I've always thought you have to clean first before applying new lube but as I've always had cheaper bso I have just put lube on top of old

On new bike I want make sure gears continue to work crisp and smooth so was going to clean prior to lube...

So far done about 400 miles if that although few times in the wet
  • If you are going to use Squirt or a similar dry wax lube then yes you should completely clean/degrease chain before applying. If you are using a wet oil lube then no point.

You don't this with Rnr unless the chain is gunky. The end lube cleans the chain as well due to the solvent carrier.

Squirt being a wax lube has no cleaning function so any gunk on the chain has to be cleaned of first.
