When you say that anyone in your team can win the problem it creates is that they all want to win.

Of course the team that makes the BBC front page headlines isn't EF, but those paddling university lads of Cambridge.
Good to see that unlike sexism, or racism, there's no elitism agenda at the Beeb.

Just a quick warning for the future. Denmark with a 1-2 for the jnr edition. 2nd spot on the podium two years running, with 2 different young riders. 11 riders at the senior edition this year. u23 and jnr world champs al over the place.

And Valgren still hasn't made a mark at all.

It's coming. Oh yeah, it's coming.

Vaughters is going to be unbearable.
Haha yes but he doesn’t get many opportunities to be.

Good race and not won on one of those aero disc monstrosities

EF obviously not too keen on the System Six. Plainly too heavy.

I think the presence of Kristoff in the chasing 'pack' rather muddied everyone's game plan...

Gutting that we don’t get to see Van Der Poel in Roubaix next week. Instead we most likely get 7 virtually irrelevant riders each from Cofidis and Vital Concept.

Chapeau Bettiol for seizing the moment. Great ride, but one only possible for a fringe rider.

Bettiol and MvdP riders of the day. MvdP coming back after the crash to fourth is extraordinary. He is incredible. Hope he dedicates himself to the road immediately after the Olympics.

Strong showing by Naesen. Wonder what more would have been possible without the cold.
Also strong showing from Matthews and Valverde. Not much missing there to make it count one of these years. Probably not going to happen for Valverde though with time running out.

Was an okay race. Would have liked to see a bit more daring on the final ascent. People not wanting to drag Kristoff, Sagan, MvdP and Matthews to the line gave Bettiol the free pass he needed to escape.

Absolute travesty that MvDP won’t be at PR
Napoleon, don't be jealous that I've been chatting online with babes all day. Besides, we both know that I'm training to be a cage fighter.

Prior to sending out invites the PR organization already made contact with Corendon-Circus and their invitation was already on the table but they declined......

Maybe he shouldve stopped playing in the mud with the kids on the winter training circuit and got a contract with a proper road team.

This is merely training for the proper racing in winter

Cross has made him what he is though! Been a huge fan ever since his first junior world title and then subsequent perfect season, not to mention winning the junior road title in off season too. Would say he is just as likely to get a result in the Ardennes, the finish of Amstel suits him right down to the ground

Very strange race. I have no idea how that actually happened. Chapeau to Bettiol for grabbing the moment.

Yes it was like 2011 - weird wind direction then too.

Bettiol was very strong in Tireno -2nd in the TT and beat some big names and had decent rides in E3.

But it wasn’t just “grabbing the moment” he dropped the best of the best on the Kwaremont. GvA followed the move and couldn’t follow the second acceleration. It was real phwoar - and Sep riding for him with such gusto suggests he had some faith in his teammate.

What would vdP have down had he not been 20km in the chase after his bizarre crash.

But that Bettiol attack was as good as any Cancellara attack. Wasn’t like he snuck off. It was at the key point of the race!

GvA, WvA, all saying they just couldn’t follow.

Belgian TV very deflated that such a nobody won.

Even GvA who’s an ex teammate says he barely knows him.

Agreed, people are being unfair in implying he got a bit lucky it was a very strong and well timed attack. He never faded either, sure a concerted chase from behind could have brought him back but that is almost always the case with a solo victory in a Classic where no-one wants to give their rivals an easier ride.

More fun, Pieter “I should probably drop two gears” Weening did both the Kwaremont and the Koppenberg in the *big ring*

He had good form at E3 as well as a previous top 10 there. He also had a top 10 at the U23 Rinse so whilst far from being among the pre-start favourites he is obviously a capable rider in cobbled Classics but I suppose you can't chase everyone once you are down to a small group

Really didn't enjoy the race. I'm hoping Roubaix will make up for it.
