From the questioning by the Tories on the committee in particular, I don't think they believe a word of what he says. Johnson clearly rattled by being expected to answer truthfully and relevantly. Would be a first for him if he did.

If your pay goes up at the same rate as your spending, and tax goes up more, then you are worse off than you were.

Obviously you'd be worse off to a greater degree if tax went up and pay didn't go up, that's the kind of thing that doesn't need saying.

The effective tax rate going up by more than inflation is only really an issue in quite a narrow band. Of course those aren't really justifiable but with the median salary well below the higher rate threshold the majority of people aren't in danger of getting anywhere near those bands.

He has paid the political price for that position by losing his job. That doesn't mean the statement is untrue.

His only defence now is that if they did it, how could it be against the rules or guidance? They didn't break the rules.

Still trying to throw a few more people under the wheels as he tries to claw his way out of the inevitable.

Unusually I found him more coherent than the committee.

My personal highlight was while insisting that the leaving drinks were essential, he said they weren't socially distanced but there were mitigations in place. What mitigations? He mentioned perspex screens in the room next door and not sharing pens.

Was that at one of the events that must have been wrong because some other people received fixed penalty notices relating to a time he wasn't there?

I suspect Farag’s main issue was that the rest of us couldn’t party rather than Johnson was. Wasn’t he strongly opposed to lockdowns?

Another amusing bit was "why didn't you ask Simon Case's view?". "I did, I asked him to write an entire report"

Find it slightly difficult to care.

Would be good if he showed a little contrition and then retired from public life.

This is worth a (longish) watch: Johnson's conclusion is that it's only not a kangaroo court if they agree with him. He's definitely on the Trump spectrum.

How high up your list of things to care about are Sunak's tax returns? They were snuck out today.

That's often the problem with politics for me. Too much petty squabbling about irrelevant things supposedly to win voters.

What do the tax returns say? From what I saw the amount of tax he pays is would be an extremely good salary to the majority of people.

He has married into a level of wealth that is difficult to imagine for most people, I'm not sure why he bothers, there must be more fun jobs going if you're gonna have a hobby job.

i think the lifetime earnings potential of being an ex-pm are significant. I think the access to people is disproportionately enhanced too.
Tony Blair / Barak Obama would probably be good examples of people whose status as ex leaders gains access to people and engagements their personal wealth alone would not.

I have little interest in his tax returns, but it appears that there is some outrage that he has paid capital gains tax on a capital gain.

According to a quick Google, the combined wealth of the Sunaks is already 10x greater than Blair's!

Not to mention, it looks like Sunak will be less successful in elections than Theresa May.

On the one hand it's trivial, but I think the point about lying to the House is not.

Neither of the 2 former PMs who voted against Sunak's deal were able to bring any followers with them

    A good day for Sunak

What is the sanction for Johnson if the committee determines he did lie?

But that’s my secondary point. Blair has a far higher long term global profile than Sunak did despite relative their wealth.
By becoming PM, Sunak global recognition is significantly enhanced. That is status money can’t buy.

Up the to committee, then a vote on the sanction in the HoC

The big one is a 10 day suspension- leaves him open to a recall petition and a potential by-election
