44x16, on my stock road Fixie, but 116.5 gear inches on my track fixie (53x12), which does make it out on the road occasionally. But I guess you’re talking about 1x chainring with a cassette, which is an abomination.0 -

Two things - firstly, Mr Falle is asking about 1x, not single speed. Secondly, you seriously ride 116 inch on the track?! Which track?? Which events?! Mind you, with your famously low cadence, who knows...
FWIW, my 1x is on 42 x 11/320 -
40 x 11-40 on my gravel bike, on gravel
46 x 11-40 on the same gravel bike, on the road. That's probably overkill, frankly, since I use 48 x 17 on my ss and fixed, apart from one that's on 49x18 for no good reason. 40x11 is a *much* bigger gear than 48x17, but I can keep up on the club run on the single speed.0 -

Cheers gents - answers much appreciated.
Am just about to put winter bike back together and have a r/hand brifter but no left hand so am planning 1x to save the £80 odd it'll cost (use just a normal brake lever on the left)
Do you guys use a normal rear mech or does it have to be a clutch thing?Postby team47b » Sun Jun 28, 2015 11:53 am

I use the same gearing as Imposter which suits me for a mix of off road/road riding. Mainly using the bike with 1x as a winter road bike at the moment though and could probably do with a slightly larger chainring (I prefer slightly bigger gears with lower cadence than the smaller gear/higher cadence I seem to ride on flats/slight downhills with the current setup).Do you guys use a normal rear mech or does it have to be a clutch thing?
Clutch for me. Not tried a regular rear mech with it so couldn't say if it would work or not, certainly not had any issues with the clutch mech.0 -

Commutor has 42t narrow wide q ring and 11-32t cassette. Race bike has 52t garbaruk narrow wide and 12-27t cassette and sometimes an 11-32t.
Both the rear mechs are campagnolo chorus or record. Chain retention is fine.http://www.thecycleclinic.co.uk -wheel building and other stuff.0 -
No clutch. Ultegra 6870 GS (medium cage, di2). Shimano SLX cassette, Sram Red chain. Sram CX1 narrow-wide chainring. Have never had the chain come off, even on singletrack. Unless I've forgotten doing it, I don't think I've even increased the chain tension. Chain length does matter - I have separate chains for each size of front chainring.0

42t on a 10sp 12-28 cassette with 5700 shifter(s) and 6500 short cage mech.I've added a signature to prove it is still possible.0

Is it April Fools already ?
Why would you have a higher gear than Chris Hoy ? And what possible use would that be on the road ?
Hard work pulling away from the traffic lights I imagine!0 -
Running 38cr with 11-36 and wifli rear mech, once I've worn out the Force kit on the Canyon that will go 1X as well.0

I'm using 38 chainring with 11-32 cassette Sora 9 speed, so no clutch. This my commuter bike and has been ridden on the road, bridle paths and one aborted cyclocross attempt (defeated by the mud, lack of clearance and incorrect tyres) with no chain drops. Currently have a Superstar NW but prior to this had a Race Face 40 tooth and no problems with either (no noticable difference in NW ring performance but obviously lower geared now).0

42/16 on my fixed commuter / winter bike...
oh, thats not what you meant/0 -
42 - 11-42T using Apex shifters and a GX mech just to cover most situations. The rotating dinner plate cassette is a sight to behold on a road bike0

cherrs dudes - much appreciated.
shopping has started already
thinkng 40 with eith 28 or 30 on the back dependant on what I can find cheapest.
30 with short cage Rival 10 speed mech should be cool, yah?Postby team47b » Sun Jun 28, 2015 11:53 am

42 x 12-25 is OK for commuting duties. Not a massive top end, just about low enough to get up the big hill with panniers and the like. (I'm normally riding fixed up this hill so it feels like an easy gear).
Depends where you're going with it I suppose.0 -

May need the mid cage if you go with a 30, that or get a dog link (Which I did) just to extend the mech range to take it, a HG500 or PG1030 should be cheap enough to get hold of in 28T flavour0 -

coolio - top post. many thanks.
agree completely: have run a 28 on a Red short before with no probs so probably going that route tbh.
now to track down a 130bcd front ring that doesn't cost more than £25.Postby team47b » Sun Jun 28, 2015 11:53 am

Back in the old day I used to ride 42/52 with 13-21 cassette, so a bottom gear of 42x21 should be low enoughWyndyMilla Massive Attack | Rourke 953 | Condor Italia 531 Pro | Boardman CX Pro | DT Swiss RR440 Tubeless Wheels

MF, try Spa cycles for chainrings.

It's a 42t, but this is offered in 130mm BCD: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Race-Face-Sing ... B00HEE7NUA
It's available in 40t elsewhere but for a lot more money. You definitely want a narrow/wide ring to stop the chain coming off. From running 1x on my MTBs, a clutch is nice to have by a NW ring is vital0 -
