There’s no particular performance advantage in being able to use one fuel source over another if that’s the question? The main issue in a long race is going to be maintaining and conserving whatever energy you have...

    Well that's that settled then!

Seriously I think there is a bit more to the debate than that - decreasing glycogen stores is linked to increased perception of fatigue for a start. FatMax differs quite a bit between individuals - if you can increase yours and hence save glycogen stores would that not be advantageous.

If glycogen stores get depleted during a race (which they inevitably will do), then the trick is to replenish them, no? I think we’re over complicating things a bit...

Yes I meant more as a training strategy. Is there an advantage in doing 2 hours fasted and trying to burn more fat rather than a harder 90 minute ride after a good breakfast. Can we train our ability to burn fat so we are relying more on that during a race and unless we are racing very long is that even an advantage - stuff like that.
The original OP was about weight loss.
    Racing is not a consideration.
The above may be fact, or fiction, I may be serious, I may be jesting.
I am not sure. You have no chance.

They were actually asking about the use of headphones whilst cycling, maybe contact a moderator ask if they'll delete everything off topic?

So in an effort to drop a bit of weight I have been upping my mileage quite a bit on the road bike...

Seemed pretty clear to me why he cycles, but yes, the question was about earphones...
    Stupid idea, since he asked.

If your getting bored on a bike and listening to audio books is your solution then I seriously suggest you find another more entertaining method of gaining fitness.

Headphones use is a polarising. I don't see a problem in having 1 ear in listening to a podcast/audiobook as you are doing. I do it quite often. But that needs to be distanced from having 2 earbuds, or a set on cans, blasting music. That, to me, is unacceptable.

However, a caveat. On a tour once upon a time, i had 3 consecutive days of strong headwind. I found that having an earbud in each ear (with a podcast on) reduced the wind noise massively and I was able to hear approaching traffic far better than with leaving one ear open.
