Broken scapula, getting back on the bike for Velosouth

I broke my scapula in a crash on August 15th. Recovery is going well, been on the indoor exercise bike a couple of times with no problems. Hoping to try the road bike for a gentle hour on Tuesday and then something a bit more strenuous on Thursday.

If that is OK, I'll have about 9 days before Velosouth. I'm resigned to a relaxed ride, not worried about a trying for a good time, but will I feel better for pushing it in those 9 days? Will a 70 mile gentle paced ride and maybe a couple of harder shorter rides help?

usual disclaimer - best check with your GP or consultant if you were being treated by one ... worse thing would be to ride and fall on it again - doing more damage this time.

whilst you've been on the indoor bike, you've not been using your upper muscles on controlling the bike - so you'll tire more easily. Certainly a more relaxed ride will be more achievable - but do note that there's very little "flat" - you're either going up or down for the vast majority of the ride. I'd get out on Tuesday for a gentle ride - just see how you get on then yes - I agree, try something a bit more on Thursday - pushing the envelope to see how you go...

I'd not do anything too strenuous in the week before VS - a 70 the weekend before may help - but I'd be prepared to cut it short should your shoulder start hurting.
There's not much opportunity to cut the VS route short - other than getting in a vehicle - 30-40 miles in is the furthest from the start we get, but even at 50 miles we're still 23 (hilly) miles away from the start
