I would never go by what is says on the sidewall, eg my Magic Marys at 2.35 come up bigger than most 2.4s and as big as 2.5s.
Have a look at this German site real tyre measurements, http://www.reifenbreiten-datenbank.de/reifen.html

    Thanks that’s extremely helpful.

  • I’ve had a 2.35” Magic Mary on a 30mm XM481 rim and that was fine. 2.5wt Maxxis DHF on the same rim is a bit wider but not by very much.

My main tyres for winter are that dhf (3c compound) up front and a 2.4”wt Dhr2 dual compound at the back. I have got that Mary but my fs bike doesn’t see too much sloppy mud so that’s now on the hardtail which sees more of a variety of trails.

In the summer I just swap the dhr2 out for an aggressor but the dhf stays on year round.

Rims and hubs now ready for the wheel build to commence. The 30mm rims weren't as wide as I expected.

Things have been busy, so I haven't posted for a while, but the bike is finished and I've already managed 200 miles on it in the first few weeks. I've not tested it on anything too technical, but first impressions are great. It climbs and descends equally well and feels generally perfect for the type of riding I do. The complete build spec is below:

    Trek Slash 9 - 2015 frame
    RS Yari 160mm forks
    RS Monarch 160mm rear shock
SRAM X01 derailleur, shifter and cassette
Truvativ descendant cranks and 32T chainring
SRAM Guide RSC Brakes with 180mm discs
    Bontrager Dropline dropper post
    WTB Volt saddle
    Truvativ descendant 40mm stem
    Nukeproof Horizon 780mm bars
    DMR deathgrips
DT Swiss M502 rims with E13 TRS hubs
Maxxis Minion DHF 2.5WT & Maxxis HRII 2.4 tyres

How are you getting on with the 'feel' of the rear suspension? Glad you're enjoying it.

    I'm sure you don't have a 160mm rear shock!
Currently riding a Whyte T130C, X0 drivetrain, Magura Trail brakes converted to mixed wheel size (homebuilt wheels) with 140mm Fox 34 Rhythm and RP23 suspension. 12.2Kg.

Haha you’re right in the shock, copy and paste issue. I think I might have meant 60!

So far so good on the rear suspension. It tracks the ground really well over pretty much everything which seems to really aid in the climbs. Overall I really like it so far but not been tested that much yet - afan end of the month so should get a better test!
