Hello fairly new to this forum - apologies if this turns into a long rambling post but am looking for a light road bike with hydraulic disc brakes. I already have an alloy cyclocross bike I've just put mudguards on which I use to commute and have been using for 50-100 mile rides at least once a week. Would like something lighter (probably carbon) and a little faster for the longer rides and have gotten too used to hydraulic brakes to go back to rims. Anyway looking for advice, don't really want to go above £2k if I can help it although this here Canyon looks on specs alone to be my dream bike - a bit over budget and with a crazy long wait list though so are there any other bikes a bit cheaper with similar spec and weight?

https://www.canyon.com/en-gb/road/endur ... c-8-0.html

Will be taking a test ride on this Boardman in a few days at Cycle Republic and at £1600 with 3 years zero interest finance is very tempting. Anyone have experience of this bike? Weight on Cycle Republic website says 7.58 kg but on Boardman site it says 8.3kg - inclined to believe the latter, anyone know the reality?

https://www.cyclerepublic.com/boardman- ... -2016.html

There is also a Canondale Synapse from Evans but they only do a 12 month interest free deal. Again Evans claim it's 8.2kg but remain sceptical when the full Ultegra version on the same site states it's heavier at 8.8kg

Are there any other bikes with similar spec and weight that I should have a look at and are under £2k?

Not quite under 2k, but an absolute steal if they've got your size...

That's the Hi Mod frame so essentially the pro level one.
  • Ooh nice thanks for the link - not my size though unfortunately - my other bike is Canondale and I'm a 54cm on that - I'm a little over 5'10"

The Boardman looks really good value. If I were you I'd buy that and replace the wheels with a set of Prime Pros which are £300 and c1500g. The 7.6kg is possible looking at the spec, and you'll almost certainly drop a further 200g by changing to those wheels, so you'll be about as light as road disk bikes get without spending mega mega bucks. Obviously weight isn't the be all and end all etc.; but if you wanted really really light for under £2k, go rim braked...

The spec is very similar to the Canyon and whilst I'd probably rather have the Canyon if the costs were the same you can do a lot with £700. It's not like some budget rebadged Chinese open mould frame jobbie - the Boardman is a quality, well engineered frame.

The only minor negative is that the new R8000 series hydraullic shifters look much nicer than the R685s, but I doubt you'll get anything using those under £2k for some considerable time.

    Something like this:
    https://www.jejamescycles.com/giant-tcr ... -2017.html

Surprisingly comfortable for what is nominally a race bike. Not super-light as standard, but with the spare cash you could then invest in some lightweight wheels

A few of us here have done this a while ago when CAAD 10 Black frames went on sale. One of very few options where it's not shouting CANNONDALE all over the place. I built mine with 685, used SRAM Red crank and new Praxis rings, Farsports 38mm wheelset. It's lightish; I just wish i'd gone with 54 instead of 56 at 5'11

I would be inclined to believe the weight quoted on the Boardman website when the model up with Dura Ace of the Boardman is listed as 8.4kg on the Cyclerepublic site.

Thanks for all the advice - the Boardman, does seem to be the best specs for the price I can find - will try it and hopefully like it, never ridden a carbon bike before, was spoilt spending some of the summer on a friends titanium and hoping for a more comfortable ride than my alloy bike. I'm not so bothered about losing a few hundred grams here or there unless the wheels make a huge difference. Do they? Will get them to weigh it at CR out of curiosity. Looked at the Giant on line but haven't been able to see one in the flesh locally here in Nottingham - don't want to be changing lots of bits on the bike if I can help it - have done quite a bit of that with my cross bike. Have decent tyres and saddle I can transfer over but was hoping to get the rest of the spec right 1st time
  • Know what you mean with Cannondale's and their unsubtle logos - my cyclocross is a tad over the top
  • Am open to buying used if anyone spots a bargain

How much return in a year do you think you can make on a set of lightweight wheels? I've only ever thought of buying wheels to use before.

That looks like a lot for the money for lanky people.

Focus Mares CX in a 54 on offer in the classifieds - £1350 being asked but probably room to negotiate further

    viewtopic.php?f=40090&t=13085357

Hydraulic 105 fitted. Seller hasn't done it any favours with the thumbnail sized pic. If you are interested I'd request a few more pics.
  • That Cube looks nice - if a little racey for my 48 year old back - would be good to be able to try one out, sizing goes 53cm to 56cm
The Focus is a cyclocross bike which I've already got, looking for lighter road bike - looked at their Paralane but 105 set was over £2k and seemed more gravel than road bike
  • 10% over budget by this Giant looks good.

Another one that’s a bit above your budget but a real bargain if you can stretch to it

Is a CAAD12 disc too racy/metallic? It's £1185 at Tredz at the moment, £1349 at Evans.

Have a look at the Attain if you're worried. Similar deals around for both. I'm 50 and not particularly flexible but have no issues with the Agree. In fact I'm still experimenting with how much further I can drop the stem as I'm working down before making the cut!

Look back a couple of posts and I've linked to the 105 Attain at Rutland which looks a good deal to me, esp with the extra discount code. They must have a shed full somewhere, they had all sizes available last week

I wasn't aiming that at you, you clearly know all about them, I was just pointing them out to the OP.

Only occurred to me because I'm now getting daily spam from Rutland having given them my work email at some point
  • Thanks for all the other options folks are suggesting, will check them all out later

Are Bowman shipping the Pilgrim yet
  • Damn that Supersix Evo Hi Mod disc is a steal !! Gutted they have no 56's : ( I'd buy one for my return to cycling once I'd back from this broken collarbone : (

keep coming back to this bike although can't seem to find one locally to try, could get Evans to order one in but am not going to pay their £3599 price. How comfortable is this bike over 50 -100 mile rides, anyone have any experience?

  • yes been looking at this

have also found the 2016 Pro 0 dura ace version at pretty much the same price as the 2017 Pro 1

    https://www.paulscycles.co.uk/m7b0s6p69 ... PRO-0-2016

am not sure which way to go - what will I be gaining with Dura ace compared to Ultegra? The spec is very similar but the Pro 0 has Shimano RS785 Hydraulic Disc, the Pro 1 has RS805 - any noticeable difference there? Am still tempted with the Pro 1 as it has the tubeless tyres and a slightly easier 11-32 cassette for hilly stuff.

Had a test ride on the Boardman today - felt nice and quick and much easier up hills than my cx - not as comfortable a ride though, maybe something to do with 25mm tyres instead of 28mm but also the carbon seat post seemed quite thick - presume you can shim a thinner one for a bit more forgiveness. want to check out the Giant Defy Pro 1 but the Boardman was fun. Out of curioisity got them to weigh it and it came to about 8.5kg with pedals
  • Just looked at the Boardman and like it alot. Also if you use aut150 code you get another £150 off. Bargain and I'm rather tempted myself
