The Thule website says that the Outride isn't suitable for carbon frame bikes, but maybe they are being over cautious. Instead they say to use the Sprint XT, which is obviously a lot more expensive! Has anyone got any experience of the (revised, post-recall) Sprint XT bike carrier? Thules' support page also recommends several other of their products for bikes with carbon frames : https://support.thule.com/hc/en-gb/articles/214350465-Can-I-mount-a-carbon-bike-on-a-Thule-bike-rack-

Sprint XT didn't exist when I bought my Outride. As a professional engineer, with a lifetime of experience (I'm 64), I cannot see any reason why they should exclude carbon frames. Complete nonsense.

Because the down tube is not designed for shear strength

Isn't the main difference between the Sprint and the Outride simply the fact that the Sprint has torque fixings and a little elastomer under the fixing point. If that is correct (?) then I would have thought that the Outride would be fine assuming that the person using it does not go a bit Frank Spencer when tightening things.

We put carbon bikes on the roof and in work stands. My concern is with the lever activated clamps where the actual pressure applied is not really known until the lever is fully engaged. So I prefer the Thule model with the rotary wheel to tighten the clamp. I doubt I could apply enough force through the wheel to affect the carbon.

On a work stand I tighten the clamp so it loosely grips the tube and then turn the clamp until it is solid but not over pressuring the tube.

Just bought two of the Elite carriers - prefer them now.

If its a carbon road bike I would not be putting it on the roof.

What do you mean, 'if'?

BTW bikes on roof C59 and Edmonda SLR, each alone worth more than the car (SAAB 9-5 estate)

Couldn't agree more. I've had 2 x C60s on fork mount Thule racks at 90-100mph in France for several hours and they didn't melt.

I wouldn't use an upright wobble rack, they look perilous to me.

Put a roof box on the car and the bikes in the car where possible. Carefully done, it's amazing how easy it is to fit bikes in

They need to make their mind up. The Outride promotional photo on their website shows it mounted carrying a Scott CR1, which I believe is carbon.

I use these on my bikes when on the roof (Thule, clamped on the down tube, older and newer versions of the proride)- no problems at all at motorway speeds. At least it shows Thule were aware of the potential for overtightening the older proride version. The new one is better for carbon with the soft jaws and probably more secure because of the clamp shape, but I find it a bit harder to load the bike because of the clamp shape. The torque setting on the tightener seems a bit gimmicky to me but I can see the point for the hamfisted among us :)
