6km of Albula still to go - and it is raining heavily in la Punt; there is a 9km descent which might be crucial and a bit hairy

    Wait, wet descent, Pozzovivo won?

He attacked before that. Had about a 30s lead (with Woods) at the summit.

Franck caught up about 30 secs on Pozzovivo during the roughly 10 km/12 min descent, meaning F’s average descent speed was about 50 km/h compared to P’s about 48 km/h. Swiss TV said F had a top speed of 64.7 km/h on the descent. Using the same ratio, P’s may have been (only) 62.1 km/h.

On Swiss spoiler forums, some people were commenting that Woods did a Wiggins, which, from what I saw was unfair, even if he did lose almost as much time to Pozzovivo as Franck gained to P.

Woods took the summit first, though, a few seconds (5-6 secs?) in front of Pozzovivo.

Other incidental news: Dowsett and GC-darkhorse Pantano DNF, Conor Dunne OTL.

And surely that means that, if he has any dreams of maintaining lead, Pozzovivo will attack again on today's lovely MTF

Over 14km at an average of over 10% - this time there is only a few hundred metres from the top of the climb to the finish line

Domestique Taramaae has destroyed the field.
9kms left and only Dombrowski left to contest with Spilak.

Err, this is looking a bit ridiculous.
Spilak soloing the last eight and a half kms.
Huge gaps already to the rest, grovelling behind.

It looks like a mountain time trial with riders going up one at a time

Spilak's post stage interview the complete opposite of Larry Warbasse's.
Goodness only knows how miserable he must be on a bad day.

  • This is the longest stage race outside of the grand tors, yes? In one of the world's most spectacular mountain regions? And yet it seems so meh. Wondering why that is? Where does it rank on the chipper scale?

In the World Tour it is, but the Tour of Portugal - a UCI 2.1 rated race - is one that is longer

The Dauphine just has a far better startlist and is usually a better race.
The Dauphine asks questions about the big Tour riders and their form, the only question the TdS asks is why does Spilak only ride well in Switzerland.

I guess the other thing in favour of the Dauphine is the ability to replicate some of the TdF route in the parcours. Bound to be a draw for the GC contenders who skipped the Giro earlier on in the season.

There's also Qinghai Lake in the continental tours. Two week race, HC clarification.

Back in 1998, there was a Marlboro Tour (of the Philippines) which was close to 20 stages. Organisers went bankrupt pretty soon after they got UCI accreditation after 40 years without it.

Watched the final time trial this morning, and Spilak on the podium as the overall winner....barely a smile.
