Stage 11: Ponte a Ema – Bagno di Romagna 161 km

START TIME: 12.20 CEST

This queen stage across the Apennines takes in 4 consecutive categorised climbs, with not even a single flat stretch in between: Passo della Consuma, Passo della Calla, Passo del Carnaio and Monte Fumaiolo. After clearing Passo del Carnaio, the route takes a first pass on the finish line in Bagno di Romagna (for the first time stage town at the Giro). Then comes a long ring (approx. 52 km) that takes the riders to clear the Monte Fumaiolo categorised summit. A long drop then leads all the way to the finish. The roadway is narrow on average, and the road surface is worn out at points. Starting from 3,500 m from the finish, the last kilometres either descend, or are a false flat up. The route drops down quickly on wide roads, with several curves and hairpins, and briefly touches the centre of San Piero in Bagno. The final kilometres are dotted with roundabouts. The last bend is 5,900 m from the finish line, followed by a long home straight, just bending slightly, on 6-m wide and perfectly level asphalt road.

This race is looking interesting now, hadn't really paid much attention to the stage guides until yesterday and hadn't clocked how TT heavy it is and by Giro standatds light on MTFs.

THis looks like a stage tailor made for them to race from the gun, if someone wants to risk losing minutes to have a chance of getting back in the GC race or in Quintana's case to reassert his position as strong favourite this would be the one. If Contador were 3-4 minutes down here there would be fireworks so let's hope one or more of the teams decides to be bold.

I hope so too. Movistar have been looking really strong so hopefully they put the pressure on Sunweb.

Quintana's a little too flyweight for ambushes like this.

He was really being blown around a lot y'day. Conditions flattered the bigger riders a little.

looking good for the rest of the race though I cant see today being a place for the climbers to get too much back.

The descent is too long to the finish, if they do get away from him, he can keep himself together, get over the top and belt back down the other side after them. I should be a DS

Pretty much a block headwind (25kph) for the first 90 odd kms, but then it becomes mostly a crosswind.
Bri Smith just said that he didn't think it would be a factor though.
He also said Sunweb will be tested and is very upbeat about the prospect for some GC action.

Back together. Loads of riders going out the back already.
Rui Costa and DD the most aggressive.

Normally yes but if the action is on all day and there are no Sunweb left to help him by then Dumoulin isn't coming back on his own.

TJ was dropped very early into the first climb.
May well be his abandon day..................again.

3 Movistar riders and 2 Sky in the group chasing the break, with Movi driving that group hard.
I think it's safe to say that it isn't going to be another dull day.

As an aside is anyone else using the Giro Android app? It's pretty good (albeit not working properly today), but somewhat annoyingly it is showing up as having a notification. But I can't find how to turn the notification off.

Amador is one of the three off the front.
    Interesting.
    GC action seems assured.

Looks like Sky are setting it up to mug somebody. Landa off the front, Deignan in the bunch of chasers, G supported in the peloton.

Can't see them being given too much leeway if Amador remains in the breakaway.

Nice to see given their high profile status as people who get mugged recently.

Might get Eurosport on the go...

Landa and Fraile have 1'47" over the chase group and 4'24" over the gruppetto.

    Correction 1'33" to chasers

As this is the Giro we really should be calling the peloton the gruppetto.

Surely grupetto = little group. Has the peloton thinned out that much already?

Dumoulin with a big mob of Sunweb riders around him, looking like a proper GC team for now.

One that's towing it's sprinter, though.
Most of them would disappear fast, if the pace was lifted.
