NIce... bodes well for the rest of the race with the three climbers all at the same time (more or less) and the TTer well ahead... perfect storm

Excellent ride by Geraint....what could have been

Right, TomDum, you've made this difficult for TeenyTana, lets see what happens

Paolo Slongo said he expected Nibali to take about 30-40 seconds on Nairo Quintana.

He took 46", so not too shabby from the Shark

That's a proper GC time gap now: with the final TT lurking, they're going to have to break Dumoulin rather than chip away at him.

Quintana now has to factor another 2 minutes into his plans, given that final ITT.
In other words, he will have to change his minimalist approach or forget the double.
Good news for Froome and the rest of the TDF GC sheep.

Nibali is still hanging around, like a 3 week bad smell.

Yep, always felt G doesn't time trial as well as you would expect for someone with his engine. He pulled a good one out today. If he can hold on in the mountains and then repeat that ride in the final TT is a podium still possible? Lots of ifs obviously!

    What a ride from Tom.

That sets up the race brilliantly because Quintana can no longer be content with taking 20 seconds here and there.

Anyone thinking there will be a long range attack tomorrow, test what Dumoulin (or Quintana for that matter) have left in the tank after today? Pretty lumpy tomorrow, maybe a day for Nibs?
  • Suited the TT "specialist" more than I expected today, but that's not taking anything away from Dumoulin, that was a fantastic ride. Now we have a race on

Tom D's odds have shortened considerably although Quintana remains favourite.

After the low-key start, we've a right Giro on now 8)

That being said I think we'll have a few quiet days now until the climb on Saturday.
It's only a bit of sport, Mun. Relax and enjoy the racing.

It's a shame dumoulin hasn't got a team. Id be surprised if he gets to the stelvio stage still in the lead. Even if he does if he's dropped on the umbrail he'll lose minutes on stelvio.

I happen to be an expert of that climb, as it's my local back in Italy. I always found it much harder than the numbers say... and Indurain would agree with me I think. The second part is consistently steep, with 10% gradients. Problem is the rest of the stage is too easy, so I don't expect a lot happening on the final ascent, which is only 750 vertical metres.. BUT, it has broken time triallists legs before...

Surely there's scope for some collaboration between Orica, Sky and Sunweb.......a combined force more than capable of shutting down Movistar. Tom D can call in a couple of favours and trade stage wins (for Land/Thomas et al) for GC time and Orica can elevate Yates back up GC and fight for Young Rider jersey/stage wins.........everybody's happy................except for Nairo/Movistar, of course.................mwahahahaha........................

We're not halfway through yet, and it's a very tough third week. Shaping up for a very interesting week and a half.

I'd argue his team is pretty strong. They'll miss Kelderman, but Geschke, Ten Dam, Priedler, Haga and Stamsnijder are all solid riders with plenty of experience in GTs.

I'd be astonished if he's not in the lead on the Stelvio stage, there isn't really anywhere where he's going to lose two and a half minutes unless he crashes or is ill between now and then.

Dutch stage winner, Dutch in pink, another in third, and neither were the winner in waiting from last year before he binned it.

I remember only a couple of years ago lamenting how grim Dutch cycling was.

    Not anymore.

If Groenewegen gets up to speed then they'll be as good as they were in the '80s.

Impressive from Dumoulin, it should be an interesting GC battle next week. Tge bookies still have Quintana as odds on favourite. G at 100/1 could be worth an each way bet after today's ride.

I can't remember one, but has Quintana ever had a significant collapse/blow up in a stage race?
And then looked like he gave a sh!t?

I think he may have been saved from that by the Ventoux fiasco last year. (Not a multi minute blow, but he looked like getting dropped from the chase group)

Maybe that's what I'd like to see in order to like him more: him sliding out the back of a chase group of GC contenders on a brutal climb (and looking like he's doing his utmost to avoid it). Rather than necessarily blowing up like a clown's car and weaving onto a soft verge for a sit down. But either is good by me.
In other words, where's the jeopardy for Quintana? Nibali, too.
They spend too much time and energy trying to convince the world that they're not overly bovved one way or another.
At least with Bertie and Froome you get the feeling that a bit of them dies when they lose.

Said it elsewhere - since i was able to watch it - the weather flattered the bigger riders.

Quintana was being visibly blown about by the wind, in a way the bigger riders weren't.
