Rim Wear: How Worn Is Worn Out? Pics Included

So I've been using this rear wheel on the turbo trainer for the last two years... pumped it up yesterday and started my warm up and heard a thumping with every wheel revolution. Fortunately I stopped and checked it out because the rim had split clean through, about 3-4 inches along at the deepest point of wear  Thankfully it didn't suffer a total blowout otherwise I probably would have ended up with bits of metal and rubber embedded in my calf and thigh!
At least I can confirm now... this rim was definitely worn out
I'll post up a pic later if I remember.
I still have the front kicking around if anyone is in need of a replacement... probably has a fair few thousand miles left of life left in it if the rear is anything to go by :?0 -
I still think you've been very lucky. Cmon; give us your lottery numbers!0

Always a lucky dip... but only when it's at least a triple-rollover0

I wonder what happened to BobbinoGS... disappeared from the forum, disappeared from Strava...left the forum March 20230

Here, we go. Doesn't look quite so drastic with the air let out of the tyre, but the rim was bulging out a fair bit from above that crack when I took it off the bike.

I once decided to ignore the wear indicators on my Archetype rims and measured them with one of those dental tools.
This rim still had >1mm so I took it to Mallorca. I heard a rubbing sound and when I stopped this is what I found.

I managed to hire a wheel for the rest of the week.0 -
Those calipers you buy for a couple of quid on Ebay are complete garbage... if you want an accurate measurement, you need a well made toolleft the forum March 20230

I think we can conclusively conclude from this thread that disc-brakes are definitely the way forward.
Glad we can all finally agree on that0
