£2500 to spend on new bike

Evening all,

Been saving quite well and I'm in a position to spend upto £2500 on a new road bike. I have been looking at the Planet X EC-130E Aero Road Bike with Di2.

Mainly be used for sportives and weekend rides.

Any ideas on others that could rival the Planet X one?

What are you riding now and what do you like and dislike about it?

2500k on a Planet X? Not for me I'm afraid. It will probably be reduced to 99p next week.

How about a build starting with one of the BMC frames mentioned on the bargains thread?

I have a giant defy disc which is a good bike but going to keep that for winter riding.
  • A 2016 CAAD 12 frameset for about £500
    Di2 group set £900
    Decent finishing kit £300
That leaves you with IRO £800 for wheels (not that you need to spend)

That would eat the PX alive...

I don't own a CAAD 12 btw, but I'm tempted to sell some carbon to fix that
  • I would love to build my own tbh. Even exploring the option of a Chinese carbon frame and doing it up.

Depending on what sort of ride you're looking for you can get a Canyon Ultimate or Endurace with Di2 for that, and the kit on those is much better than the PX in my opinion.

I just checked the Canyon site and they're double fr M what I have to spend.

    Where else can I look?

Really? All sizes of the Ultimate CF SL 9.0 Di2 are under £2400.

Bloody hell that is good. Will take a look. Also seen the Ribble Aero bike which is slightly over my budget but can stretch a bit.

Don't drop £2500 on the Planet X. I've heard it rides like a wet noodle. Wouldnt spend it on a Ribble either! You have a great budget to get a top quality bike, don't waste it!

    Got a medium/large giant frame

Help me to choose one then haha. I do like the thought of buying a good frame and building around that.

Have a look at Rose. Similar to Canyon but you can pick and choose components so it's a bit of a halfway house between an off the peg bike and a self build.

Something you wont see at the cafe stop http://www.tredz.co.uk/.Orbea-Orca-M20- ... _95661.htm
    Great bike.

Or the Canyon Ultimate mentioned above. I'd be tempted with the £1700 spec and use the rest on a bike box and cycling holiday. Ha

I can still have the holiday so that's my £2500 budget safe and sound haha.

You won't see many at the cafe stop as they've all gone back to to the manufacturer for repairs

Not sure this is quite true. Cycling Weekly give the PX a glowing reviewhttp://www.cyclingweekly.co.uk/re ... -x-ec-130e

and yes, I'm a biased PX owner a bit fed up with the PX bashing on this forum!:

I think part of the problem is that PX are forever having huge sales. If you buy a Canyon the chances are there won't be a sale taking 30% off the price a week later.

  • I'm virtually in the exact same position AircraftHandler1979, got a Giant Defy Disc at the moment which will be my winter bike when I get a summer bike.

I've been looking at the Orro Stc Gold,
    https://www.orrobikes.com/bikes/road/go ... a-11-speed

In your price range and the bikes are getting good reviews.

That Orro does indeed look mighty fine and, unusually for a black bike, still seems to stir my blood! It would also tick the box for something unusual. I ride in a popular club and have never seen one out on the road...which could be good or bad!
  • Yeah I really like the look of it as well Bobbinogs, think you hit the nail on the head bud there's just something about it that gets me as well :D

Cannot say I've seen one either but think that appeals to me as well.
  • I have seen the Orro bike and i must admit i do like the look of it and the reviews have been spot on. I'm pretty much torn between the Orro and the Canyon Endurance with di2 which is just over 2500 mark on the canyon website.

By the looks of it the wheels on the Di2 Orro model are worth over £1k. It looks a very good package for the price and it's a very attractive looking bike in my opinion.

    Go for the Orro!

Good shout, CAAD12 looks good, and my friend sold his SS6 as he preferred the CAAD, and he is infatuated with the SS6.

Agreed with the avoid PX and Ribble if spending that much.

My 2 pence, find a bike you like the colour/look of, then start considering what you can finish it with.

    Yes, this one:

A quick search of the wheelset online says they are 35mm full carbon and I can't see them for under £1k. Not too shabby on a Di2 bike selling for only £2750.
