I had a crashend of last year. My phone was in my back middle pocket. I landed on my back and cracked the screen. Luckily it still worked to call out on.It was my old phone so I don't care too much. If it were on the bars it would have been annihilated. Best to just buy a cheap old rubber keyed phone for emergency calls.
A cheap £10 phone from Vodafone. Makes/receives calls, great coverage, very light and battery life is measured in weeks. My smartphone is left at home.
Fearing the same, I always wrap my iphone in a few layers of bubble wrap and an elastic band around this. I still easily fits into my back pocket — and along with the leather case it's in — 'should' protect it in most normal offs.
Having used various smart mobiles over the last few years I found the following when using Strava.
IPhone with standard battery goes flat quicker than I can eat a mars bar.
Nokia Xperia good battery life.
Samsung S5/6 good battery life.
HTC even worse than IPhone. A few good points above, ie not a good idea landing on a mobile in pocket. Samsung S7 to big in my view as is S6
I now have an Iphone 6S which is fine, but I prefer my previous 5S, as a) it was a bit smaller and b) easier to use and hold when riding. 6+ or 7+ is too big for me.

easier to use and hold when riding?
For filming! Or for summoning the other half in case of puncture / bonking (running out of energy I mean, not the other kind....)

I've had an iphone 6+ for 2 years, never had an issue with it in my jersey pocket.

if you're going to spam the forum with marketing questions at least admit it and not pretend you're looking for genuine advise
