A lot of people with diesel's get the DPF removed as it can create other problems, especially if used on short runs in town. considering it is their to remove soot particles from the exhaust you can imagine the effect removing it has. If they started prosecuting the places that remove them it might help.

We've just replaced our car and for exactly that reason we were advised against a diesel. There weren't many non- diesels to choose from (sadly an electric or hybrid is out of our budget for now) and it will be a big job to shift them all off the road. Still UBS give them about 10 years before they are a dying breed.

In other news, I'm finding the Plume app quite useful as a guide to how filthy the air is.

Right now I am listening to the soft chatter of a running diesel engine in a white van from which the driver is holding an apparently endless conversation with a bloke in a hi-vis.

It's been going on for about ten minutes.

If ever there should be a justification for being to machine gun the both of them and the van, it's this.
Swim. Bike. Run. Yeah. That's what I used to do.

I think you'll find this provides much more satisfaction as a method of vehicle disposal.

Actually, looking back at my Plume log, apart from a bad spike in January and one or two other days, this year hasn't been too bad - relatively speaking.

That's why the air is clean. ;) The wind blows all the nasty stuff towards London most of the time.

Blaming the wind for pollution is like blaming the window for the bad small after farting in a car

It's baaaack - a 'red alert' has been issued for pollution today by the mayor's office. Good day to take it easy out there.

  • Have you guys and gals seen the luftdaten/airhor sensors ?
    https://www.byteyourlife.com/en/househo ... -info/7204
They are only £30 to build and can help get a lot of information.
As part of the wider picture, with loads of them around, it's really quite telling.. (http://deutschland.maps.luftdaten.info/#5/51.372/3.032)

I've built one, and got another 4 to go fit into local village coffee shops to get more info around the wider area.

Also worth looking at the calibrated sensor sets that use the World Health Organisation definition of the air quality index, not the UK one which is in some instances twice that allowance..
