PX were doing windproof ones a few years ago - think mine were under £50 and I've been happy with them on sub zero rides this year. Not wateproof mind, but you could spray them ?

Those look pretty good. I wore the Nitelife repel today at 4 degrees and they're really good.

The DHBs have a zip! Thats a PLUS . Are you waiting for Medium..? Somehow longs with pads , I can never ride comfortable in...I have depadded a couple to keep me riding ok with normal bibs underneath.
Waterproof..? nah doesnt happen.. I use my Sports Direct plastic over pants for that - cut at the knee of course , otherwise it'd look silly ;-) ha

Positive review here of some Endura ones that might fit the bill. Presumably available for less than RRP if you shop around.

Also worth considering the Morvelo Stormshield tights which are very nice.

  • What about these if you can stretch your budget a little?

I have Orkaan shorts/leg warmers, really rate them.

How far do you ride in winter? On Monday I did 4 hours on a basic pair of Planet X long bibs... kind of light Roubaix type, not as thick as the DHB Roubaix and my legs were fine. Air temperature was 2-3 degrees... I can go sub zero for shorter rides no problem.
I am generally overdressing, compared to other people out on the roads

Castelli Sorpasso are circa £111 in the sales. I haven't got any but friends who have, report that they are extremely wind proof and effective at keeping one warm.. I just bought some castelli nano flex bibshorts and use these with nanoflex leg warmers, to give me options as the weather warms up. Plenty warm enough if riding hard-ish - been out in 37F and stayed warm enough, as long as not dawdling - and a good degree o water repel-ency too.
I already had the leg warmers so the bibshorts made sense @ £68 on sale.
Nano flex bib longs are £88 or there abouts...

The Sorpasso are absolutely not windproof. Not the not windproof ones anyway. What they are is incredibly warm for such lightweight tights. Incredibly warm.

Personally I don't like windproof ones all that much as the fit is almost impossible to be absolutely happy with. The Lusso nitelife or dhb normal aeron are great choices.

  • I'd suggest Bontrager Velocis Stormshell bib tights, but they're around another 40, I'm afraid.

Nothing beats DHB winter tights in my opinion in terms of value and performance. So much warmer. Not to mention it is rain and wind proof. But most importantly it is warm and it is most noticeable when it is below zero it is much warmer than others. I love the pad too. Sure the water proof fabric is a bit tight but I prefer tight around my legs for a bit of compression feeling. I just bought another pair and thats coming from Rapha, Castilli (worst one I like because of thin padding), Asos, Pactimo, Craft, and Endura.

Seriously just wait for it back in stock.

Anyone use embrocation on their legs as well as/ instead of biblongs ?

I'm still using a pair of DHB super roubaix biblongs after 9 years. The ankle zips are buggered but my overshoes take care of that. I particularly like the double layer of material over my knees when it's properly sub-zero. Not waterproof though, but surprisingly warm when wet.

I'd hold out for the DHBs coming back into stock

Thanks, the DHB Deep winter - had 1 in stock in medium - so I snaffled them up !

(now wondering if I should have got the santini)

Wiggle said they restock winter kit until mid jan.

No. I cycle commute. Dont have time in the morning to rub my legs up and down.

However, its a good idea. Legs don't really get cold just don't like the chilled feeling and the DHB does that amazingly and no need for any embrocation.

If you want Santini then go for that? No need to wonder.

Annoyingly, I don't think they will be (they're marked as no longer available). I'd been umming and aaing about buying some of these, as I find my non-windproof sorpasso bibs a little on the chilly side.

Firstly though the sorpasso are not rated for anything under 3C? I remember it goes from 3-15C?

They are good 5C above to 15C. For me its the padding as well that I find it a bit thin compared to Cytec ones DHB uses.

Well Ive ordered the DHB now.

I have a problem where the base of my spine is really prone to cold - thinks its from an old injury. and Just wondered if the heat generating (different to keeping you warm) properties of the santini behot might have been better. I had been waiting for the DHB deep winter though, so will see - wiggle are usually ok with returns\swaps

Are you looking at the right ones - they come in many flavours - it is confusing

These were the santinis - I was considering - which look comparable and a little cheaper !

Look at all the santini bibs on offer on wiggle. Look at the number of reviewers as compared to DHB or Castili bib tights.

Do you not get an impression why there are almost no reviews from users? Its not popular. Not popular is because its not that great.

I wouldn't say its as clear cut as that. But yes the the wall to wall recommendations pushed me in favour of the DHB. The santini get good reviews on the web - and the heat generating aspect appealed to me.

I know the heat generate thing excite you. It did for me as well when Uniglo lauched the first ever heattech clothing. I bought a lot. Never used for cycling. Used once for badminton and it was just wrong. It heated up so hot that I couldn't keep it on. They are not made for sports.

You want something to keep your heat and keep out the chill. Not to generate and make you hot.

I never used santini but the heat generation thing doesn't excite me. I choose wind proof and water proof any day on top with the fleece lining of course.

You should get that Santini a try. Maybe you can give us a bit of a feedback. Maybe I will go try it out.

Yep they were the one's I was after. I agree that Wiggle do seem to have a broad range of very similar products, but also seem to have quite short production runs that sell out quickly (I've been caught by items selling out whilst I've been returning another in the past). For all that, I do like the DHB stuff and generally find it fits me well, in contrast to some of the more expensive brands. As others have noted, my experience of windproof/waterproof bibs is that they often don't fit as well, but the DHB seemed to be well rated in spite of that. I'm not inclined to take a punt on the Santini's without some recommendations or an idea of how they'd fit. I guess the search goes on.

Keep an eye out - as they have been out of stock in medium for a couple of weeks - then they had 1 yesterday. I understand the sizing can be difficult so they may have some returns....

+1 to that. I ordered a LS jersey in the sale in a size S. By the time I'd tried it on and found it too snug the M were out of stock. 2 days later one reappeared and I snapped it up.
