    buy a decent bike that can take guards, lights etc. robust wheels as standard. focus on getting better on the bike, then upgrade. don't forget get decent kit to help with the conditions. you can get a perfectly decent bike for £500.00 then save a bit of cash, and in the spring maybe get something for the summer.
