Broken bones..... The road to recovery

5 weeks ago I crashed out of a duathlon doing just shy of 30mph. Result was a fractured pubic rami, fractured collar bone, separation of the AC joint, fractured first rib and possible fracture to sacral spine. I'm now able to walk a little with no crutches and little pain. It's been nearly 3 weeks since the shoulder op that plated my collar bone fracture and reattached my shoulder to my arm with a LARS artificial ligament. Just wondering if anyone has stories of recovery of any similar injuries especially of how you kept yourself active and away from daytime TV!!!

Recovering from a knee op i found that box-sets and an impending exam kept me away from houses/antiques etc
  • Best of luck with the recovery. I'm sure you'll be back in a couple of months.

I was out for 10 weeks with a fracture in my spine and 5-6 weeks for broken ribs but the pain was still there for a long time after...

    Hope you're better soon

When I have injured my self over the years for example broken collar bone, ribs, ruptured Achilles. I have worked around the injury, i.e. with the ribs, collar bone when I had a reasonable about of mobility. I started walking gradually increasing it as pain tolerance allowed. I did end getting problems with blisters on my feet as they weren't up to it :D . Achilles I trained upper body as soon as pain allowed.
It's about a routine, with my Achilles rupture, the missus would bring me a flask of coffee while I was still in bed as she left for work. I would the read for an hour or so, get up have a bath ( which was a bit of an epic) try to stop sweating, have breakfast. Try to do my normal routine of lower back/ shoulder exs. Watch a bit of TV do some exercise, go on bike radar :(
Read, more internet turn the TV on turn it off, talk to the cats.
It's a pain but it doesn't last for ever.

      I like what Webboo wrote.

I broke both first ribs from my head going back too far, and suffered other awful injuries because of an inattentive motorist.

Remember how fit you were and use it as a goal (or step off point) to move forward.

Understand that at some point in the future you'll be over and done with the injuries.

    • Over the years broken T7 Vertebrae, Tib and Fib, wrist, ribs, left clavicle. Had most metalwork removed still in clavicle though. Last break was last October on an MTB when the chain dropped off the large ring resulting in a broken rib....apart from the pain and trying to sleep/function which gets better as whatever injury heels....staying positive and eating well is paramount. Staying active is important to me so as well as less frequent cycling with a broken rib I started hiking/walking which I have got into and have continued along with my road biking. Get physio booked as soon as possible.

But I'm beginning to think maybe it's hurting me in the long run. I did some research and found that cigarette smoking affects you greatly in the healing time of your broken bones. But what about marijuana smoke?

I'm recovering from a shattered hand at the moment. Asked the surgeon if there was anything, anything at all I could do to improve the healing process - diet, exercise, work etc. He had one reply and it was stay the hell away from smoke.

I know this may not be possible, but does your vocation allow you to work in your current condition? Even a couple of hours helped me mentally.

I'd have hoped he has recovered by now - its nearly two years since he posted!

Haha! My mistake. Replying in the 'new posts' bit is my downfall.
