Golden cheetah and stress chart

Well given my lacklustre performance in road race over summer today I surprised myself. O.K it is a flat course which works in my favour but I did alot of work on the front which normally causes me to tire and drop off (I get around this by sitting in if my inital efforts in race cause fatigue). Today that did not happen. I did stretch on the front lap after lap without tiring. even had a sprint at the end but finished 8th die to being cautious going through the last corner ( a very wet and windy day).

The bit I dont get is over the few weeks (since mid september) I have upped my mileage putting in more far more hours in than I have over summer) and while initally that has not done much (blew up in the last race I did in september) this week I have felt better than ever but no rest days for the last two weeks and I have done 20hrs of training with recovery rides.

I fail to understand this.

Would the stress charts from GC help here as most of my training is done without a PM only a HRM. here is the chart anyway. It seems to show stress was quite low before today but is it making good estimates from heart rate data.

The questions.
Do the stress score work with heart rate data only.
How do i use this chart properly.

I need to manage my fatigue well as there are cx and mtb races to keep me entertained.
