Chest infection and Asthma

Hello chums,
for the last 4 weeks or so I've had a cold and chesty cough etc.
For the last 2 or 3 weeks I've tried to cycle or run at an easy pace.
And that has gone so-so.
However, as soon as I stop, I can't get my breath and am breathing as hard as I can .
This takes 20-30mins to settle, seems to be like asthma.
However, I've never had that before, and during the year I've done loads of climbing etc with no probs.
My doctor said I should be able to exercise whilst getting better, didn't think that was too clever, and had another serious attack after a short run.
I have now given up on sport for now.
Anyone else had this?

Yeah I found that when I had bad asthma it increased my FTP watts per kg to 6.5, enough to win the TDF.

Always good to take the advise of a medical professional. If a doctor says there is nothing wrong with you they may well be right.

Rule of thumb I was given years ago....

If it's above the throat, carry on.
    Below the throat, rest it.

Asthma is a killer, chest infections can quickly worsen and can put you out of action for weeks.

I've been hospitalised from not listening to advice and putting myself in danger...

I had never had any signs of hay fever or asthma until one day at 49 years old I woke up with a very runny nose which soon developed into a cough and eventually diagnosed as late onset asthma. At this time I was a regular runner, biker and also teaching scuba diving so a very active life. I eventually got the correct regime of meds sorted and got back to an active life biking.

If the symptoms you have persist go back to your doctor and ask him to check you out, as others have mentioned it may be there is nothing untoward and you just have a bad cold.

I had asthma quite bad as a child, but it gradually improved during my adult years. It still comes back if I get a bug/chest infection, and sometimes cold morning air in the winter doesn't do me any favours either.

If I do get a chest infection I try to exercise through it as much as I can - I verily believe that 'keeping all your systems running' will clear it through rather than lulling around waiting for it to go. But fighting infections takes a toll on the body and I do need more sleep, or the occasional nap. I also have a 'preventative' inhaler that I take during these times.

If you think you are asthmatic get an appointment with an asthmatic clinician (likely a nurse at your local GP's) who can do volumetric tests, etc. to asses your condition.

But in all likelihood it just sounds as though you may have pushed yourself a little too hard in the beginning and your infection's taking longer to clear up because of it.

    Good luck.

You could - until you get healthy - instead of abrupt stop, walk at decreasing speed for 5-10 minutes after your run?
Same for bike, very slow spin to wind down.

This doesn't seem to work, as when I was last running I had to walk back over a mile, and was gasping all the way and after when resting.

    Thanks for the messages.

If you have an asthma episode you will be struggling to walk 5mts let alone a mile and you will have the feeling even when resting that you cannot get enough air. Go and see a doctor or asthma specialist.

    Small update.
After a rest of nearly 2 weeks, still with a small cold in the background.
I went on the bike Saturday for a super easy spin- 11m at 12mph- slightly heavy breathing after for 20min.
Went out again Sunday(today) for 11m, super easy again, and breath was just about ok.
Will try and build it up over the next few weeks.

Apart from some lack of fitness, I'm back to normal.
