Can I just enter ? in anyway ?
You don't have to raise anything for charity.

I thought there was a min sponsorship requirement ?

Nope. Just pay your entry fee. It ain't cheap... but there's no ballot, it's first come, first served

I paid £75 for the velo last year - the charity insisted on £100 sponsorship - but next year its £400 min. I was sure when I signed up you had to choose one charity to fund raise for ?

    Nope.

Not quite sure what you ended up doing, but I just paid my 75 quid.
  • No, no sponsorship required.

You must've ticked the Charity option.
    £75 and ride.
About a dozen or so mates from both CCs I'm a member of rode it.Non of them did it for Charity.
    I'm pre-registered for next year.

“Birmingham is the best place in the UK.”
That man is clearly deranged! Perhaps the Birmingham tourism board should sponsor him next time?

Improved out of sight in the 25 years I've lived in Birmingham and the surrounding area, but best place in the UK is pushing it a bit

I know - I was brought up in Tamworth and live in Coventry. I like Brum and agree, the improvement in the last 25 years has been enormous - but I couldn't resist a cheap shot :D
  • My dishwasher broke this week, the man that's come to fix it this morning was one of the support vehicle drivers :)

Been having a good natter about that side of things, to me it sounds much harder work than simply riding round the 100 miles

Spoke to guy at the council - he said a massive of relief was breathed as the whole thing passed off relatively incident free.

His personal opinion is that Velo 2018 is no more than 50/50 at best - (at least in the closed roads format) - conversely he also heard the other midlands councils would like to run closed road sportive of their own - Nottingham being particularly keen.

Time to get writing to the council saying how fantastic it was then :D
  • If I were a publican I’d be fighting to have the route pass by - they did great business from the looks of it. I don’t think riders will carry much sway with the council - it will come down to business and lobbying by local residents. Would be an awful shame not to go back to Bewdley, Kinver and Droitwich where the support was amazing. Likewise some of the smaller villages like Belbroughton.

It would be a shame not to start and finish in Birmingham city centre - as a resident here that was a big thing for me, finally coming onto roads I know well at the end and finally swinging onto the Hagley road and down Broad Street, seeing it all closed for us. Was brilliant.
  • I agree. It needs the city to anchor the event. I guess the other option would be to go south into the Cotswolds but more difficult as it would potentially mean closing more main roads than just the Hagley Road and Broad St.

My hope is that more locals are on side this time round having now seen what it was like - the thousands of people lining the route, the pubs and other businesses etc Let's hope they don't get drowned out by a small but vocal number of naysayers.

The hairy arsed farmers will be too busy worrying about their loss of EU subsidies to trim anymore hedgerows

More realistically they'll use their lobbyists to ensure that the EU subsidies they currently receive will just be passed onto the British taxpayer instead.

Just Google 'Natural England' to see what a real mess of subsidies, the UK can make of things.

Spoke to my contact at Birmingham City Council. He rates the chances of 2018 closed road sportive as no more than 50/50. Apparently some of the smaller councils are reconsidering for next year.

That would be a shame, except for the idiots with the tacks / oil, it was really nice (as long as you avoided the issues with the feed stop at halfway). It would be a shame not to have it running again ( this coming from someone who doesn't much care for Sportives normally).

Hmmmm. Someone I know has said it's been confirmed as happening.

    Time will tell I guess...

I think the company CSM active are trying to apply the pressure by pre registering loads of people to prove the demand is there. I think Birmingham Council are on board with Velo 2018 - but without the support of the outlying councils where is it going to go.
  • Some interesting developments:

    - CSM have registered a new URL as http://www.velomidlands.com . Your guess is good as mine but it could be for two reasons, the event won't start in Birmingham, or; they are trying to rebrand the event to avoid the problems of people living outside of Birmingham feeling disassociated with the city and questioning why they have been 'lumbered' with a 'Birmingham event'.

    - The most likely date for a 2018 event is 30th September to coincide with the Cycle Show.

    - My informed sources instruct me that a ''northern route" has already been prepared but Birmingham City are pleading with Worcestershire to support a 2018 event. If all of the counties opt of the event, Birmingham City Council as a the contract holder with CSM would be left with an enormous headache.

    - When Worcs CC eventually permitted the road closures for 2017 they also stated that they would agree to closures for a further four years in alignment to Birmingham City's contract with CSM. However, the political leadership reversed this commitment in favour of a fundamental review of 2017 before any further commitments are given.

    - Belbroughton Parish Council have petitioned Worcs CC not to allow the route to pass through their village. If it does go ahead, they have stated preferred dates to avoid the popular Scarecrow Festival which attracts thousands to their village. Other parishes are also belly aching over the event. In reality, their views won't carry much weight unless the local councillor and Worcs CC cabinet member is flustered by local hostilities.

    - The Severn Valley Railway have instructed Worcs CC on their 2018 gala date. The SVR should be underestimated given that are huge contributor to the local tourism economy and through their political clout. The conflict of dates in 2017 was a serious blunder by CSM and Worcs CC will take note in terms of road closure dates. Fortunately, the SVR's 2018 gala is the weekend ahead of the most probable velo date.

    - In my locality, the Tories have leafleted several thousand residents for their 'views' on the event. So we can assume that they are stirring up the mire.
  • Interesting (and slightly depressing) stuff.

I m feeling gloomy about the prospects of this event returning in a meaningful sense for 2018 - Lots of 2018 sportives have been announced ...and by this time last year I think we had paid our fees ...

I got approached by their corporate team last week regarding a corporate team entry, so they are intending to run it.

My clubs calendar has it listed on the 23rd September - whether this is info someone has been given or an educated guess I have no idea.
