  • I don't really know, the only information about it I can find is http://www.cxmagazine.com/stybar-turns- ... ve-tilford which is an article about how it's terrible that US cx riders are not paid as much as Belgian riders (who'd have thought?!). It does seem a somewhat fantastical amount of money for what is really a niche sport. I was told that a ~ top 5 female rider could expect to earn around £40k, but Vos much more than that because of her endorsements.

Well...it is huge in Belgium to be fair. 1 million is a quarter of Peter Sagan and I guess , at the time, Stybar would have been equivalent to a van der triplet today.

I confess I did nt see what MvdP said but it's pretty poor to not go out to do the World Cups I think. But he's far from the only one that did nt go. Truthfully, I suspect winning the Super Prestige is a lot more lucrative that the World Cup...

He had knee surgery in the summer, wasn't quite fit enough to race the US World Cup rounds.

I watched the DVV Verzekeringen Trofee - Hotondcross Grote Prijs Mario De Clercq on 9 oktober 2016
This is the hill above RONSE and what a race it was, with the World Champion loosing his chain twice and having to fight his way to the front 3 times to win the race by over haf a minute.
The strength he has, was shown as he caught Van Der Haar (dutch champion) and just rode past him, after so much time lost into the middle of the racing field.

1 Wout Van Aert (Bel) 1:02:01
    2 Jens Adams (Bel) 0:00:31
    3 Michael Vanthourenhout (Bel) 0:00:36
4 Mathieu Van Der Poel (Ned) 0:00:55
    5 Kevin Pauwels (Bel) 0:00:58
6 Lars Van Der Haar (Ned) 0:01:04

  • Van der Poel broke his pedal while being way out in the lead. Looked painful!

Excellent live coverage of today's National Trophy 2nd Round from Abergavenny today courtesy of S4C. Not sure if you can get English translation or not but great to see them really taking on the event with some nice highlights of the Welsh Series yesterday as well. Driest I've ever seen the course but the designers still made a very technical circuit. I even got myself plenty of coverage on marshalling duties!

  • I haven't watched the coverage but the event was good - a real credit to the club. Nice to be able to race the day before, and additions like the big screen were a good touch. Even after listening to the chat on Saturday evening, I'm not sure CX in the UK will ever reach the heights of Belgium. Interesting to see a good number of Belgians though - presumably points hunting!

Glad you enjoyed it. I'd agree that cross will never reach Belgian levels of popularity here in the UK but the change in the sport since I rode local races regularly in the early 90s is immense. Back then it was mainly a few roadies breaking up their boredom at winter training with a bit of run in the mud. We would have maybe 40 riders in the main race and the vast majority would be riding a mountain bike or even a converted road bike. Only a small handful would have spare wheels let alone a spare bike and the bike would get one wash down in a race, normally in a stream or pond on the course. Now the local league has had to be split to give the vets their own race as fields had got up to around 150 (and we are a small league compared to many - someone was telling me yesterday they'd had over 180 riders in the vets section of their league on Saturday!).

I think a few Belgians have targeted the National Trophy for 'easy' UCI points and ended up also doing the local league race on the Saturday as they were over. I think they found yesterday that it isn't necessarily an easy option these days though.

ICYMI Helen Wyman and Nikki Brammeier had a nasty crash at the European Championships. Both in a bad way, with Helen coming worst off. Hope they both recover well and come back stronger.

Helen's other half Stef has written a piece on his experience dealing with the crash aftermath and some thoughts on sharing of crash videos etc. Worth a read: http://www.helenwyman.com/2016/11/think/
  • I totally agree with Steph Wyman
  • Todays race cancelled due to high wind. VdP not happy.

Sounds like Nikki was in a worst way than first thought:

World Cup in Germany. Impressive by van der poel - breaks some spokes and pits losing 18 seconds to van aert and then storms back to take the win by 21 seconds.

They're showing the DDV Trofee and some Super Prestige rounds live on the bike channel, plenty of re runs too if you miss them.

Watched the WC this lunchtime on youtube, good comeback from M VdP and Pauwels. Got Sundays DVV to watch in the morning if I get up early enough...

    Loving the cross this winter.

Superb 7th place at the Vlaamse Druivencross for Ffion James, still only 18 years old.

Riding for Boels–Dolmans, while Meg got to guest slot for Rabobank.
Amazing yesterday to watch Meg at 16 riding right on the wheel of Ellen Van Loy, Sophie De Boer and eventual winner, Sanne Cant, who was 12th today.

Especially impressive when neither is a full time cyclist as well. Natural talent and all those Saturday mornings in the mud at the leisure centre are really paying off!

Was watching the Sporza stream and heard them mention Ffion but couldn't work out where she was as was looking for the GB colours.

Outstanding! Congrats to Ffion and Meg, all the family must be very proud
  • The race can be seen here, if anyone besides me (out yesterday) is interested.

Can we seriously start worlds talk now?

I think this may be Cants year! I find it amazing how many potential winners the womens race has though, you could make a great case for at least 7+ riders and not one of them would be a surprise.

Cant see WVA in the mens myself.
It's not so much about winning, I just hate losing.
