So a GC gap of 1.21. Doable, but still unlikely

1:21 behind now, has he got enough in the tank for tomorrow?

    But for stage 15..............

Yep, just thinking the same. That's turned out to be a balls-up of GT losing proportion.
It's only a bit of sport, Mun. Relax and enjoy the racing.

Quintana said he needed a 3 min buffer going into the TT... that was about right. Didn't crash, still got a good lead... tranquillo...
  • That's a pretty good ride from both Froome & Quintana there. Contador too.

Losing 2:40 in a single stage is pretty much always a balls-up of GT losing proportion! Can't remember anyone coming back from losing that much to a GC rival for a long time, other than Nibs in the Giro. Two Lazarus style comebacks in one year surely too much to hope for?!

Too much to do still. As others have said, Stage 15 has cost him.

At least it means Sky have a real (albeit tiny) chance tomorrow so it should be race on.

I'm not called Captain Obvious for nothing*!

He couldn't, could he? Can you imagine if Froome gets this back tomorrow? The clinic would be apocalyptic.

*I was only called this by one poster previously, but there is a pattern emerging

  • I reckon it'd be almost neck and neck had Sky not lost contact on stage 15 - Froome would probably still have a lead but my guess would be less than 30 seconds.

Good ride and all but isn't this kind of par for the gap between Froome and Quintana in ITTs; 2:04 in the similar length ITT in the Tour this year. I think Carlton may have been overexcited! Is perhaps Contador's performance below par here?

It will interesting whether Contador now settles for 3rd on the basis that 1st and 2nd are long gone or whether he tries something silly and loses 3rd as well.

The difference being at the Tour Froome was right on his game whereas Quintana was obviously below his. Quintana so far in this Vuelta has shown he is in much better form so the 2:16 gap is very pronounced.

He didn't race them though (aside from one appearance at the Commonwealth Games)

  • When was the last time Quintana lost over a minute on a single stage against Froome? First appearance at TdF?
  • Found the answer! Stage 10 TdF last year 1:04.

Anything is possible, but I'm very certain Froomey will be happy clinching 2nd at the Vuelta. It just shows that the double is, potentially, still possible in this age.
