When I mention them as a great band, it is usually met with blank looks

Not a massive fan, but I love the album "Dirty", which was their MTV era effort

No they are a great band,Dirty,Goo and Daydream Nation are fantastic, can always remember the video for 100% and ogling at Kim Gordon, really liked the Pixies around the same time when everyone around me didn't really get them at the time, popular now though all the tickets for Leeds academy this November had sold out on pre sales, bit gutted but i have seen the a couple of times in the past

Another one of these bands was Kings X first two records were really good

Puressence. No-one else I know has ever heard of them. Ditto The God Machine. Puressence split up a few years back, The God Machine's bassist sadly died in the mid nineties which put paid to them

I've always liked Paradise Lost, but most of my metal-loving mates can't stand them

I remember Car Song, and the associated album. I do YT Car Song occasionally for a nolstagia fix.

The album it's on is "Panic On". Excellent.

It's just a hill. Get over it.

Got two albums by them, "Only Forever" and "Planet Helpless". Great stuff.

Geneva - first album was wonderful.

Not an obscurity...and plenty will have liked them back in the day, but...

having loved 'Come Home' and 'How was it for you', I got really sick of hearing 'Sit Down', then forgot about James.

On a whim, and just looking for something different to listen to, I've 'discovered' all the work they've done since Gold Mother, and I'm mightily impressed. Superb.

Agreed, thought they were the best thing in the world for a couple of years.

I have some of their tracks on the mix I listen to in the car.
  • In the 70s/80s I seemed to be the only person who still listened to King Crimson. Now it seems that they were always the ultimate prog rock band according to every documentary about that period. Maybe Nine Inch Nails will be remembered the same way.
Court of the Crimson King was awesome.....

How about Pallas? Saw them in the early 80's at a small venue in Glasgow as the warm-up for Marillion. The lead singer had this mental mirrored helmet that meant you couldn't hear him properly. I think they're still going.

The Chameleons - first three albums were amazing.

    My hometown band.
But what about the Reegs? Dave and Reg in a later, lesser known guise.
Not as strong vocally as the Chameleons, but "Return of the Seamonkeys" is a classic that I can't help returning to, all these years later.

    Yes, you did.

Love 'Big Red Letter Day' but never heard any of their other stuff, any recommendations?

You appear to be same vintage as me. Try Scarce (one perfect album), Swell (Too Many Days Without Thinking is a classic). Belly a bit more obvious, but worth a mention as they did their first tour in 20 odd years recently and were excellent. Loads of other randoms from back in the day.

Some real low-key early 90's stuff on here so far. Love Tindersticks (drank warm lager backstage with them in Nottingham at one gig in 1991 or 92, - rock and roll!). Like Morphine and bands like Cud, who often seemed to play early afternoons at festivals...Some great US bands - love Dinosaur Jr and Mudhoney, who were a less commercial, less successful version of Nirvana.

I spent many a happy evening at the Wedgwood Rooms in Portsmouth in the early-mid nineties, loving These Animal Men and S*M*A*S*H, who seemed to be on every couple of weeks. I was a fan of Powder for a while as well, but never met anyone who has heard of them.

Good stuff, the new wave of new wave right? Pearl Lowe's daughter probably more famous than she / Powder ever were!

Thought of a couple more myself. Brad (may be known to a few Pearl Jam fans) and anything else Shaun Smith has been involved with (Satchel, Pigeonhed). Very talented guy. Also Belgium's finest Deus. Some great albums pretty much unknown since the first couple in the post-grunge early 90s, I think they are still going.

Love the chilled out vibe of Brad Shame, really great album still listen to it regular now, like Mother Love Bone as well the band before Pearl Jam,the other band to link Pearl Jam,Mad Season,Above is such an amazing album, and with the way how all the band members all met in rehab as well,Staley at his best

Curve and Lush are another two bands I love but nobody else does. Lush recently reformed, and the EP they put out was excellent

Also - good shout on Brad - 'Shame' is a great album. Not so much the second one, but love Buttercup, Screen and 20th Century especially on Shame. Satchel were a bit less consistent for me, but The Roof Almighty and Hollywood on 'EDC' are brilliant

Always liked Lush as well, until they went a bit brit-poppy with thier last album.
Actually met Miki at a Throwing Muses gig in London in 1995.
Did the whole drunken fawning 'I love your music, can you sign this?' thing.
Still embarasses me 20 odd years later, when I recall the experience.

They always struck me as really, really nice guys, whom you'd love to go for a beer with. Shame they couldn't keep the original line-up together, IIRC Stuart and Dickon were pulling in different directions.

Another blast from the past: One Dove. One album, then...oh, and in the same vein, Sneaker Pimps. I'll also throw in Lamb and The Aloof ("Sinking" was a total classic)

No doubt there will be some enlightened, but not a band I can talk about without people saying "Who?".

I liked their near hit "Nemesis" (1985) which managed to fit in the word "Parthenogenesis" as a rhyme in the chorus.

I liked Lamb (well, their one "hit" anyway). Heard it on 6 music a few weeks ago, took me ages to remember their name but I got it in the end. Reminds me of Bjork's early solo stuff (well, some of...)

They were a nice bunch, although Staples came across as somewhat aloof. They signed a "No More Affairs" poster for me, that I carried around for years before giving it to a Dutch mate of mine who was a big fan...Simpler times...

There was always going to be someone who was your "nemesis" :D Big like here.

I still play ‘My Spine (Is The Bass Line)’ at dark venues where the young people go to dance and ‘Coelocanth’ from the Manhunter soundtrack is a great piece of music from a great movie scene.

I seem to be the only person that likes The Church. ‘Is This Where You Live’ is one of my top 10 tracks ever.

I love Tindersticks too. My all time favourite band of all time. Durutti Column is one I seem to like but nobody else has heard of.
    I love both these bands.

    Love Sonic Youth.

    Dinosaur Jr.

Let's be honest, those two kind of go together.
