I've never ever had the unit measure speed when it's paused.

I ve never seen my Garmin measure 0.0 when stopped (on GPS)

I have auto stop set at 1kph (I think) to combat this

    Which model?

My auto pause is set to whatever it defaults to. I stop, it stops. I go, it goes. I've never had my Garmin read that I was moving when stopped. Now, as you slow down and stop it does take a second or to to stop. But it does.

Bizarre, my 800 always reports I am cycling between .1 and .3 mph when stopped, never see it stay at 0.

Initially had it enabled to pause when stopped but as the speed is a bit flakey even when stopped, i guess it's still recording movement.
My 800 did this when I had the setting on "auto-pause when stopped" I changed this to the customised setting and set this at 0.00 and it now reads 0mph when stopped 8)
  • I have an 810 and my Strava vs Garmin times are out. Worse when I am running it without a sensor. I find it mildy irritating I cannot deny. Pretty sure back in the day Strava used ot use moving time/speed.

Looking at it why 3 times on Garmin Connect, anyone tried disconnecting their account from Strava and going back to uploading separately? My curiosity has been pinged

Garmin - In Traffic so autostop coming on and off a fair bit Distance 14.85 mi
    56:38 Time - 56:10 Moving Time - 58:40 Elapsed Time - 15.7 mph Avg Speed - 15.9 mph Avg Moving Speed

    Strava Distance 14.8
    57:08 Moving Time
    Speed
    15.6mi/h 32.4mi/h

I'm very much in the who cares camp on this but i'm intrigued why people are looking on both Garmin Connect AND strava,

Just use one with one consistent algorithm...

  • You right of course, its a habit really - back when the odd KOM might have come my way. Strava still handy for seeing how you are doing in your own times up certain hills etc. Doesn't both me other it is a little weird as the Strava data comes from Connect and is not the same so Strava adds a layer of manipulation for some reason which is curious. Plus which one is accurate lol

I preferred the old connect to Strava!!

My 500 I have my auto pause set to 1 kph or something to allow for GPS drift as I mostly do not use a speed sensor. A pause message will flash up when I go below this, but it keeps showing my speed.

Even though the device is paused and not recording, I will see the speed go between 0-0.5 kph with the gps drift. If gps fix is really bad sometimes this is enough to un-pause it momentarily.

When I have the speed sensor on, it reads zero when stopped, as if it's not using GPS at all and so not getting the slight drift speeds.

Are you sure you Garmin is pairing to your speed sensor and not just using GPS all the time?

I do sometimes get a small difference between garmin average speed and strava uploaded speed. I would never notice, but the odd time it has gone from 30.1 to 29.9 and I clock it.

In a similar way I notice that the average speed on the left of the speed graph in analysis tab is sometimes higher by the same amount as my garmin compared to the ride overview details in the top right (e.g.https://www.strava.com/activities/601777638/analysis = 30.2 V 30.3).

edit: I will add that the 0.5 mph difference you see in a interval ride where you've tried to edit out some of the recovery time isn't worth worrying about. But then in your first post you say that some rides it's been out by 2-3 mph when you haven't stopped, which is more significant.

    talking to me?

On the "fast roadie"I have a speed sensor and then yes it reads as 0.0. But on the "slow roadie" and MTB I don't bother with a speed sensor.

Just general reply to the which devices show a speed whilst paused, think bender asked.

Then rest for the OP :)

I wondered that when I sat waiting to cross the road today. 520 in pause mode, rock solid, 0 mph. I wonder if 500/510/800 are afflicted with wandering? I can't be that lucky can I to have a flawless 520?

No he wouldn't. He wouldn't even be looking at a PC, he'd be out there mashing fook out of the pedals and making sure the speed doesn't drop below 25mph
