Well, yes and no. You get fitter recovering from exercise, not by doing exercise. During and after these efforts, your muscles degrade, and keep degrading for up to two days until you get amino acids and protein into you. http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/11255140
So your body doesn't process protein and amino acids differently just after exercise, but your muscles will continue to degrade at a higher rate until you get some into you - muscle recovery.0 -
Goodness me! Finally someone actually discussing some science rather than just blathering on about how great their homemade chocolate milkshakes are!
Goose has got it spot on here, the "window" for protein intake for optimal recovery after exercise might not be as acute as with carbs, but getting an easily digested and rapidly absorbed source of protein into you after you finish a workout and a adequate protein supply in the following hours, will help promote muscle synthesis and recovery; making sure your muscles aren't severely glycogen depleted (by taking in carbs during/after your workout) will help prevent muscle degradation.0 -
neeb wrote:I use the high5 recovery stuff, not because you can't get the same benefit from other things but just because it's quick and simple and doesn't need thinking about, and I don't want to be faffing around with mixing things together just after a ride. If I liked milk (hate the stuff) I might just drink chocolate milk, although even with that you have to remember to buy it regularly and keep it stocked in the fridge. The high5 just sits on the shelf in a big tub and takes a minute to make up when you need it.
I've got some SIS recovery stuff ...
it's quick, easy, simple to transport and very palatable - like for after the Flanders sportif where all I needed was water to add to the powder.
Plus, I'm not using it every week - just after hard sessions (which are probably too infrequent - but there you go) and I _think_ it helps the muscles recover as they don't seem to feel as bad the day after.
Milk and other stuff may be cheaper per unit cost - but for me, it's not worth the faff for the amount I use. If I was doing regular hard training and always ending up back at home then I may consider a cheaper alternative ...0 -
What is the objective?
and is she aware her needs are very different to yours - females have vastly more growth hormone than men but little testosterone, therefore high protein recovery drinks don't really work.
If she aches after the gym - I'd suggest she is not doing a proper cool down and stretch.
Secondly, most of the protein drinks contain almost as much carbs as protein and a lot are just caffeine, sugar and whey
If the objective is to develop lean muscle, then you are better off with the better quality body building protein drinks.
The other thing to be aware of, is that if she's hitting the gym to get to a better figure, pre and post training drinks around a 45 minute aerobics class, will probably net off the calories burned.
Personally - you can make decent recovery drink with apricot, banana, chi seed and some milk in a blender.0 -

Objective is to tone up and add a small amount of muscle mass, she's a slim build and complains that sometimes weight goes on at the wrong spot so is hitting the gym to try and balance out her skinny arms and legs.Advocate of disc brakes.0

People spend thousands on a bike and then complain that recovery nutrition is too expensive. Laughable really...0

Not that the above was aimed at me, but I'm not complaining about the price at all. It's a small price to pay for less earache.Advocate of disc brakes.0

... and people spend large sums of cash on supplements they don't need. Go on... give them them your money and you too can look like the person in the advert. Why tidy the house when you can clean your bike?0
