Bib Shorts Review

Before last year, I would have said the best bibshorts by a mile were the Castelli Free Aeros. Unfortunately they replaced them with a COMPLETELY different design last year which I find unwearable, quite literally. So I scoured the internet buying up old stock, one pair from Italy, one from Germany - now have 6 spares which should last me a while.

The endurance look like the might be a little like the old Free Aeros - if that is the case then they would be great.

I would certainly try the DHB and Etxeondo if I had to get some new bibs now. The Etxeondo Dicolor my son has were a big step up from Endura FS260 for comfort, so we sent the latter back and I bought myself some Dicolors but havent used them on the bike yet.

The Castelli shorts (Nanoflex) I have with the lower KISS seatpad seem to have the pad in the wrong place - its halfway up my back and I dont sit on it unless I am REALLY upright on the bike. If the pad were in the right place, they would be great shorts. I still wear them because they are the only shorts I have which are as warm as that, for crossover weather before switching to tights.

I went straight over the bike shop this morning and they didnt have any of the endurance in stock, so i purchased a pair of the free aero race.

Just done a 74 mile ride and i am pleased to report no soreness!! I did use chamois cream too tho.
The only thing id some stitching has come away after the one ride where the lycra joins the leg gripper so iwill take them back tomorrow to hopefully exchange as other than being a bit tight around my balls, they felt great. I have never ridden that distance with as little discomfort.
the saddle on the bike i used is a spec romin evo 143mm wide, the saddle on the other bike is a 132mm wide selle italia slr flow, so i think thats what has caused the extra sores.
The one i already had seemed to be getting better after i noticed my saddle wasnt quite straight and was a little too nose up. Now straight and level its much better.

Fingers crossed this is the way forward for me.
    Cheers for the replies chaps.

TIght around the balls is, for me, a very free aero race thing. It's probably because I have a huge set mind. It was only ever that that put me off them.

Ah, well i wouldnt say that i was particually well endowled and i went for a large, maybe i should have gone for XL

I had to pull them down a bit a coupke of time as i think when upright the shoulder straps were what was pulling them up.

  • Mavic HC bibs are a good race fit with decent pad. Google them, I think Wynstaleys had them at £60 instead of over 100.

Any recommendations for long aero bib shorts? Not a short/short man myself.

Something just a tad above knee level would be perfect.

La Passione are quite long and the Rapha ones can be had in a longer leg

Long aero? Yeah, Assos Mille Long leg. I'd wager they're as aero as anything labelled aero.

Rode in to work this morning, bit chilly like but anyway, second outing of my free aero race bibs and i noticed when i got to work that they had ridden up my leg a bit, probably about a hands width from my knee (i have small hands tho)
of course they may be different on you however but if you are dead set on not having anything higher than the knee then maybe they are not for you?
    other than that, still comfy.

oh, i also found them for £70 if you dont mind the colour at the bottom

mine were £130 but i got 10% off at my LBS
