  • Sounds similar to the way I felt a couple of years ago luckily only for 4 months..after seeing my doctor loads of tests etc and none the wiser the generic ibs was diagnosed with no cure mentioned.

    After much net trawling I found 2 things that kept coming up, go gluten free and having those probiotic yoghurt daily...I decided I had nothing to lose so got rid of everything in my cupboards and went totally gluten free and started the pro biotic yoghurt on the same day....my ibs stopped within 48 hours and has not returned in 2 years...

    I'm not strict but I still keep my diet as grain free as possible etc

    I guess there is the potential for some sort of gluten intolerance with me. I've just started having probiotic yoghurts so hopefully that might help things out, if it makes no difference I'll have a look into the gluten issue.

    Also, get your ears checked. Once I had mine syringed that also helped my general well being!

    I did have a bad ear virus 5-ish years ago, so guess that could be something to have a look into! Cheers

    I've not been to see a counsellor. I think a lot of the problems that were causing me to get down have been rectified, I've got things out of my life that were making it hard for me to be happy, and that has made a big difference. Whether the drugs have made a difference or not I'm not sure, but I think getting rid of all that bad stuff has reduced the need for a counsellor. I do try and be positive all of the time, but it does get hard when I often have such little energy and I'm not sure what a counsellor could do to help with that :( Thanks though!

    There is little evidence that probiotic yoghurts do anything other than con the guilable.

    Eating vegetables, especially raw helps maintain the gut properly without gimmicks.
  • I am not a doctor so wont comment on medical issues - when I raced I had very similar symptoms which was caused by over-training. Everyone is different and it's all relative - my solution was to vary my intensity and reduce longer rides from 5 hrs to 3hrs and my team leader made me take proper rest time using the one day off a week ( no cycling ) - reduced hours one week a month and easy riding one month a year ( usually October or November - after the race season ). I noticed my performance and mental state was much better.

    Anyone else suffer from any of these symptoms? Would really appreciate some advice, as I'm wanting to get back into racing this year but can't even work above threshold because of my fatigue.

    Tl;dr, fatigued all of the time- looking for a solution!

    Seems pretty similar to me. The odd thing is that I used to be fine until about 3 years ago!

    Thanks, I've had a look at that. I did actually suffer from a period of glandular fever-like symptoms 2 or 3 months after my exhaustion first started, although blood tests showed it wasn't glandular fever - I had some very swollen glands though! Could be linked to that I guess, but I was feeling exhausted before I got hit with that.

    Nope! Although I do tend to quite often suffer from UTI-like symptoms, but repeated tests have shown that there isn't anything wrong.

    I've been a reader of the forum but have joined since reading your post.
    I had very similar symptoms to what you describe. A sensation of tiredness despite keeping really fit for many many years. Considerable going to the toilet on many days which was getting worse despite eating plenty of healthy food. Good sleep but a real feeling of fatigue whatever I was doing and a general sense of just not feeling right in myself and how I was operating mentally. And real bloating and some really bad trapped wind. I honestly thought I was just getting old. (I was 48 at the time).
    I eventually went to the doctors and explained to him that I thought I was suffering from IBS particularly as Monday always seemed to be the worst day. He concurred, suggested that I took tablets to combat the wind and just be careful with what I ate. ..... Luckily I returned some six months later. We discussed other possibilities and fortunately I was offered a blood test to be tested for Coeliac. Results came back as positive and I was sent for a stomach probe after which I saw the specialist. He told me emphatically that I was indeed a coeliac as with blood test, stomach results .... And the fact my daughter was coeliac ( it is hereditary)
    You could have knocked me down with a feather as I never thought you could be diagnosed at 48 but apparently this is when the diagnosis is most often made.
    I commenced the new total GF diet immediately. My first nights sleep was a revelation. I woke up feeling totally refreshed and just feeling good. Energy levels returned and my old zest for everything in life just came flooding back.
    Some three and a half years later I still feel good. On the very odd occasion if I have eaten something contaminated, even if just a small amount all the old symptoms return and really give a depressed feeling and a return of going to the toilet very very regularly, wind and bloating. Luckily this doesn't happen as v careful to eat 100% Gluten free diet.

    Calbelfield do check this avenue out as the symptoms are very similar. If I can help in any way please make further contact if useful.
    Hope this might help you. Do check it out fully..... Do ask for all blood tests.

    PS there is no half way house with GF. I have to do it fully including separate toaster, not eating chips from the chip shop as will be contaminated with batter, checking all food labels etc and checking with chef when eating out.

    I don't know about 'proper' illnesses but I know all about stomach trouble. I wake up, drink water and am on the bike in about 20 minutes. Many times I've got the bike ready then had to dash back to the toilet for the second or third time since waking. I cut out milk years ago as I developed an intolerance to lactose - any more than about a glass of milk would result in agonising stomach pains and as I've got older and had a few stomach bugs my stomach has gotten more and more fussy.

    I also found running messed up my stomach completely. A hard run in the morning would give me stomach cramps and have me going to the toilet 10 times that day. Any hint of a cold coming on and the dodgy stomach would come. Gluten was definitely an irritant for me (when that went the stomach cramps from running went). My stomach remains fussy, fruit with a main meal is a definite no as is a hot drink after a main meal - raw spinach causes indigestion and I've had two stomach bugs after kid's parties where I decided to hoover up the uneaten food (never again!).

    After a lot of trial and error I've ended up on pretty much a vegan diet now. Things like meat and cheese feel heavy but I can wolf down vegan foods without a problem - I feel full but never bloated. I eat about 15 pieces of fruit a day, as many vegetables as possible and loads of rice, potatoes, pasta (GF) and oats. Tonnes of energy and the stomach is generally happy. I would definitely recommend trying a diet like this for a few weeks if you have stomach issues.
