What shoes do you wear with flat pedals?

This is just for my curiosity, because I've noticed when I search for MTB shoes that they're all set up to use cleats: what sort of shoes do flat pedal enthusiasts wear? Is it a regular SPD shoe without the cleat fitted? Regular walking shoes? Is there such a thing as a flat pedal shoe?

There certainly is such thing as a flat pedal shoe. Plenty around but Five Ten Freeriders are my choice; very grippy and probably the most comfortable pair of shoes I own. Soft sole not suitable for off-bike use though.
Shimano's AM series come well recommended tooCurrent fleet

Shimano AM41s or FiveTen Impacts,
Teva also made some decent shoes but It looks like they no longer do so.
Any Skate type shoe(Vans etc) will be grippy enough but not particularly good when wet.
You can also wear the MTB SPD compatible shoes without fitting cleats but they tend to be too stiff and not as grippy as flat/skate soled shoes.0 -
I've got a pair of Sombrio Float, dry faster than 5.10s, grip about as well, and on sale at CRC for £20 if you don't mind white. Mine are old and black.
£25 for high top if you don't mind odd colours.

I'm using skate shoes which ride fine, but I rarely ride flats. Only issue I have with flats is that they are useless in mud and slippy ground which I mainly ride.0

Why would flats possibly make any difference to how a bike rides in mud?Current fleet

Don't ignore Teva flat MTB shoes - I have had a pair for the last 3 years and they are excellent.0

I've had some shimano am41s for the last year and they work fine on my flat pedals.
If your riding in muddy weather I think flats are better as you can put a foot down for support rather than having to unclip.0 -

You really aren't that stupid that I have to justify this with an answer??

You'd better put me in the stupid corner too. I used my flats at the weekend, and it was tres muddy. Any issues I had weren't down to my pedals0 -

I never said anything about flats affecting how a bike rides in mud.
Flats are useless (for me) in mud as they have no grip. If I am putting my foot down its generally to stop me falling off my bike, if I'm wearing flats then I have no grip and I will fall off my bike still. Not always but it does happen, and may not happen to anyone else. And before someone says it I ride clipped in but do take my feet out when required.0 -

Maybe you have a bad shoe/pedal combo? Riding in mud works for me...-Cube Acid 29" 2013

It's nothing to do with the shoe/pedal combo......it's the shoe/ground combo!0 -
Most shoes with a fairly flat sole are fine. Only those with big chunky grips will have problems.0

This makes no sense0

I ride greenlanes and footpaths mainly, there are times where I have to get off my bike, put a foot down to steady me, carry my bike over obstacles etc. MTB SPD shoes give me the grip I need to be able to do this, flats do not. I once bailed going up a steep incline and slid all the way to the bottom and my bike landed on top of me because I could not get grip in the mud wearing flat shoes. I ride clipped in but will also unclip for technical sections as I have SPD pedals with cages so can ride both clipped in and out.0

I Know that I will probably be laughed at by people (most likely RMSC lol), but to be honest flat pedal shoes haven't worked so well for me, so after quite a bit of testing and trying out I have settled on just using normal high top shoes, e.g. Jordans. Not normal, but works for me.-Cube Acid 29" 2013

fivetens impacts, only downside is when worn on hot days your feet get soaked in sweat, also offer some protection from roots/rock strikes as the front of the shoe is covered with thick plastic, sole is sticky and stiff and can walk ok on most trail conditions, not for hiking but won't say no to hike a bike situations“I am a humanist, which means, in part, that I have tried to behave decently without expectations of rewards or punishments after I am dead.”

5 10 Impacts for me. Got them over Christmas and in the limited use so far very impressed. Only downside as far as I can tell is weight - they are huge. Absolutely stunned by the grip on flat peddles.
Might try the Freeride when we head into summer.2015 Nukeproof Mega TR 275 in raw0 -
Got some multi sport shoes from decathlon, very grippy on and off the bike. Second pair of multi sports and wouldn't turn back I'd buy the same tevas again but they are discontinued unfortunately.SHUT UP AND RIDE!!!

Hahahahahahaha. You use flat pedals? And Wear high tops?
To be honest, on the odd occasion that I do use flats I like Shimano AM41's. Very nearly as grippy as 5.10s but without their super absorbant qualities. I don't like trainers or other non cycling shoes because I hate having any flexible. In the sole, makes things feel a bit vague and indirect to me.Transition Patrol - viewtopic.php?f=10017&t=130702350 -
Shame those Sombrio only come in girl sizes

One of my mates was sponsored by Sombrio and still couldn't actually get sensible size shoes in a reasonable colour. It's never a good look when you can't actually use your sponsors products.Transition Patrol - viewtopic.php?f=10017&t=130702350

They seem to be about standard. I'm a 7.5 to 8 (UK). I have 2 pairs of 8 and they fit fine, just a fraction roomy, which is good for Sealskinz in nasty weather.
At £20 odd, whatever the odd colours, they are a bargain. I have low ones in black (bought ages ago) and the high top in electrocuted lemon. Which is not as bright in real life as the picture and will be caked in shite soon anyway.I don't do smileys.

And don't worry about the girl size feet - nature compensates. Guys with big feet have tiny dicks.I don't do smileys.
