Any ice in Richmond Park today?

This is building my business case for a n+1 Cannondale Slate/gravel bike/CX, something that can take on the MTB track but still be fast on the road.
I took a brompton on the Tamsin trail section- it was a little hairy but I would take my Fratello on it with the 30mm strada biancas.RIP commute...

Sub-zero forecast for this weekend too ... might take the CX bike out instead of the road bike.Shut up, knees!

You need spiked tyres, periodleft the forum March 20230 -
A mate went down at the bottom of Sawyer's yesterday, along with a scooter, apparently.
Been on the CX bike, so pretty much stayed off the roads the last couple of days. Great fun on the trail!FCN 2-4.

snow and ice. Reminds me of this from a few years back. robbed my son of his Go Pro, but realised low light is not one of its strong points. This is the Purbeck hills from 0700 in January... Ice..yup..Waterloo - White City

I am slightly confused as to why people would go down a 12% off camber hill when its icy outside...Blog on my first and now second season of proper riding/racing - www.firstseasonracing.com0

Is there any good tyre for 12% off camber downhill on ice?0 -
The forecast last Monday was 3 degrees, that's why..0

The forecast last Monday was 3 degrees, that's why..
Air temperature has no bearing on whether it's going to be icy or not. Typically ground temperature is lower than air temperature, unless the sun is shining directly on the ground, then it becomes the opposite. I wouln't feel safe just because the air temperature is set to go down to 3 degrees and not zero.
Temperature is a poor indicator of heat exchange, but it's easier to measure, as opposed to enthalpy, which is a good indicator but hard to measure
I'll take my coat now...left the forum March 20230 -

That is why they didn't grit, yep, I did notice looking at my garden and then car windscreens that it clearly had gone below 0c - maybe I'm just a bit weary of ice generally.Blog on my first and now second season of proper riding/racing - www.firstseasonracing.com0 -

Road bike no, cx/hybrid maybe, MTB yes.
Or take the tasmin trail or though Pen ponds which are safer options.0 -
-3 today so likely to be -5 or so in the park. I doubt there'll be black ice but I'm skipping it anyway and going via Ham instead. Be interested to hear from anyone who does ride through.0

It was fine.
Nowhere near -5 IMO.Blog on my first and now second season of proper riding/racing - www.firstseasonracing.com0 -
Was fine; odd bits of ice here and there, but nothing particularly hazardous. -4.5 degrees according to my Garmin, but I think we established last year that they under-read; can anyone remember the offset? Was 2 degrees colder than Ham and 4 degrees colder than Central London, anyway.Pannier, 120rpm.0

I'm of the opinion that they're generally 2 deg under the actual. If it had really gone that far below then there would have been ice on that pond thing by the Ballet School hill, but there was barely any.Blog on my first and now second season of proper riding/racing - www.firstseasonracing.com0

Interesting digression into Garmin accuracy. I always thought my 510 was accurate and the BBC weren't. It was reading -1.5 when I hit the black ice the other day (against a forecast +3), and it felt about right, but that's not very scientific. The temperature in the park is usually lower than outside anyway, not sure why but maybe it's less tarmac to warm up under the sun and less dwellings to leak heat out. Feel free to lambast me for simple theories :-)
I did see some posts on the Garmin forums where the 510 was measured against an accurate thermometer and seen to be about 2 degrees lower. Think I might just pop it in the fridge which is a constant 3 degrees (unless someone wants to get into Samsung fridge thermometer accuracy) and see what it says.0 -

You are taking forecasts way too seriously. If you get a 3 over London, you can assume there might be spots where it goes to -1 and other spots that never go below 5... it's an indicative temperature. Richmond Park is notoriously a cold spot, typically 2-3 degrees colder than the surroundding built up areasleft the forum March 20230 -
Garmin read 1 degree in the fridge so sounds like the 2 degrees off is pretty close. Slightly disappointed that it wasn't as cold out as I thought reducing the badass factor.
Still, it read -8 on the way in today, which is pretty cold, even if it's really only -6.0 -

For instance, yesterday morning my Garmin was reading -8.4 in Richmond Park (about the same as my garage) but was up to -0.5 by the time I got into Central London. On the way home, the indicated temperature was constant all the way to the park, and then dropped 4 degrees as I rode across the middle. The differential varies though; this morning, the park was only about 2 degrees colder than Central London. As we've discussed, the absolute values from a Gamin need to be taken with a pinch of salt, but the differences should be reasonably accurate.
The effect is known as the Urban Heat Island. The difference is more pronounced during/after still, clear nights (such as we've had recently) because the park is able to radiate its heat out into space without that heat being replaced by reflection from clouds or warmer air blown in from elsewhere.
As an aside, my garage seems to be quite special; it's invariably a whole lot colder than its surroundings (in Winter) or a whole lot warmer (in Summer). This means that, regardless of season, most bike fettling has to be done in the kitchen. The difference is so big, I should probably investigate a way to extract power from it :-)Pannier, 120rpm.0
