Except as it's westbound it's actually the finish line, just as CS8 finishes!

It is a bit of a pain from the Blackfriars Bridge area; now they've configured the roadworks you need to walk the entire length of the "down" ramp and beyond on the pavement. I'm sure there's a better way; any suggestions?

This - they've put plastic barriers all along the access to the down ramp while they build the segregated cycle path on the bridge, so the only way to get to the Embankment coming from the north is to cross numerous lanes of traffic and roadworks at the top, walk down the pavement alongside the 'up' ramp and then cross both lanes of traffic and the central reservation, then cross into the CS. A ballache which I can;t be bothered with, so I go over Blackfriars Bridge and then right on Stamford Street.

I found a better route last night:
    Left onto Ludgate Hill
    Right onto Godliman St
Straight over Queen Victoria St onto White Lion Hill

How well it works depends on your starting point. I normally ride down old Bailey and then Blackfriars Lane, and I reckon this route might actually be faster because there are no traffic lights. Getting across Queen Victoria St was a doddle as there's a gap in the central reservation (presumably for this exact purpose).

If you're already N of the river cant you head a bit east and drop down opposite Southwark Bridge or is that too far?

You could; depends on your starting point. The route I described achieves the same thing without going as far East (not quite as far East as the Wobbly Bridge).

Is this still on target to open on 30th April?

Contrary to my general ranting, quite looking forward to it and I hope they are a success and not carnage. I know they aren't for me but I've already proposed me and the other half, who doesn't cycle much, commute in one day this summer.

Honestly it's decent to use even if you're shifting.

Indeed, so far so good and it'll be nice when its a complete section. The big questions will be asked when its being used both ways.

The accidents will be with people joining it at speed - saw a bloke sweep in without a single shouldercheck; he sped up to avoid the cyclist coming towards him and thus very nearly collected the bike coming from behind. I have started shoulder checking whenever I pass one of the flat pavement sections - people join with complete abandon; I don't know whether they are unused to the manoeuvre or just foolhardy but they seem to consider the lane they are crossing but not the people in the lane they are joining

Not sure how it can be - there is still loads of work to do where the ns/ew highways cross, as well as North of Blackfriars bridge in general and at Parliament Square.

The Westminster - Blackfriars stretch looks ready to open end of April; the Southwark to London bridge and the Tower Hill stretches are the extremely dangerous roads. How soon will they open to cyclists?

Southwark to Tower is virtually done.Tower hill looks miles off. If this works and there is an explosion in cycle commuting it will be funny to see them all funneled into CS3 at Royal Mint.

Coming north over Blackfriars, the CS is near enough ready, but as soon as you get onto the north bank there is a lot to do. The bones of it go about as far as the Italian consulate, but beyond that they've not even started, and it's not clear what they are going to do. At Stonecutter Street, there's what looks like the two lanes switching to the other (east) side of Farringdon Road; anyone know which route option they decidedly to go for?

The ramp up to Blackfriars is ready, but they haven't quite finished the routing at the top. Tried it this morning, huge improvement over previous route options.

BUT: how the hell do I get on the route direct from Northumberland Ave????

It's just a hill. Get over it.
  • A couple of the pedestrian crossing lights are very well-hidden behind the trees going westbound from Blackfriars. So much so that I got shouted at by a ped for running a red that I only saw once I was about a foot away. Once the lane is fully open and there is the full volume of summer traffic on there it will be dangerous. TfL really need to put lights on the right hand side as well as make the existing lights more visible by pushing them out further from behind the trees. Ridiculously badly-designed and implemented.

Ah classic. I had a policemen tell me off for not wearing a helmet once.

Suffice to say I was young enough to surpass his officiousness with my own, in a "nerr nerr you don't know the rules" way.

He then noticed I was riding a back pedal only bike and booked me for that instead.

    Tosser.

On the way home last night I came off the bike just where the cycle lane officially ends before Parliament. I have been down there at least 100 times yet for some reason I tried to turn right too early into the traffic and almost ran into the pavement. Last minute swerve saved that but I ended up on my side !

none of the cyclists heading west stopped to ask if I was OK. Nice chap cycling east illegally on the path did stop to to see if I was OK. Luckily only my pride was hurt.
