stanchions

Greetings all,
Curiosity question about stanchions and the color/material. Why are most brands favoring black stanchions, is there a reason or is it just purely cosmetic. Would love to see the new Ohlins forks in the same lovely gold thats on the other two wheeled toy.

It's just cosmetic and marketing bo11ocks.
If the Ohlins fork is as unreliable as the rear shocks then I wouldn't have one. I've new seen three rear shocks snap damper rods on Specialized Demo's.
It's also impossible to get any custom tuning work done and only one or two places can service them.Transition Patrol - viewtopic.php?f=10017&t=130702350 -
Thanks was thinking it was cosmetic but just wanted to confirm.
Interesting insight on the Ohlins. I have some on one two wheeled toy and was expecting the MTB forks to be just as good. Will have to wait for some real world reviews but just the news of this peaked my geek radar haha.0 -

Interesting point in the first response re how people are happy to spend £100s on an iPhone but think £500 is a huge amount for a bike0 -

Non sequitur. (Google it if your brain hurts) Still makes them look like a BSO - IMO.

Is that just not the Demo? I've heard of and seen Cane Creek and Fox shocks snap on Demos, it's something to do with the suspension action flexing the shock at the end of the stroke.0 -
Never heard of a Fox shock breaking on a Demo. Ohlins worked with Specialized during development which is why it's currently exclusive to Specialized. You would have thought they would have done some testing to make sure it wouldn't snap like Cane Creeks do.
I wouldn't have a completely sealed shock which I can't service and can't be tuned if it's not right or you want to fit it to a different bike.Transition Patrol - viewtopic.php?f=10017&t=130702350 -

He's saying the coating, whether black or gold, makes no difference, but some very good forks have black stanchions.I don't do smileys.

Agree about silver stanchions, they look nasty,it's what has put me off Marzocchi of the last few years, may be decent for but they look horrible
Would like to try a pair of Ohlins forks at some point, rode a GSXR1000K7 a few years back with Ohlins both ends, and was impressed no end how nice it felt0 -
The colour isn't important, its the material and technique of coating that makes a difference.
Silver stanchions look cheap because they are cheap; they're usually just untreated stainless.
Equally, some black coatings, like Fast Black work well, others like the black on my old Super Ts are terribleCurrent fleet

Silver are usually chromed mild steel, stainless is too expensive, that's why they rust!
Anodizing is not strictly a coating, its a chemical reaction with the top layer of metal (aluminium usually).Currently riding a Whyte T130C, X0 drivetrain, Magura Trail brakes converted to mixed wheel size (homebuilt wheels) with 140mm Fox 34 Rhythm and RP23 suspension. 12.2Kg.0 -
Chromed, not stainless. My mistake.
Quite right, anodising is not coating, but Fast Black is.
I was attempting to draw a distinction between the colour of the stanchions and the manner in which the finish is applied. Hence saying that anodised black stanchions on old Marz's and Fast Black coated on RS do not perform the same and this has nothing to do with the colours chosen.Current fleet

I'm no scientist but I'd suggest the quality of the metal is more relevant than what colour it is.
But what do I know.0 -
Not if a low friction coating is used. Then the quality of metal mainly. effects flex not suspension action.Transition Patrol - viewtopic.php?f=10017&t=130702350
