Excellent news.

Froome got an mbe for winning the tour twice. Wiggo did it once, called everyone a c unt in a press conference and got knighted.
I know Wiggo did a lot more than just win the tour but it made me smile.0 -

I thought it was just because honours tend to increase in levels and wiggo built up his through olympic golds before getting the knighthood in 2012. Pretty sure if Froome keeps winning the tour he'll be a knight before long regardless of where he pays tax...0 -

I always thought it was stupid to give people awards whilst they are still competing.
What would they give Brad if he was to win in the Olympics, make a comeback and win the Grand Tour trio?
Pure fantasy of course, but for arguments sake. The above may be fact, or fiction, I may be serious, I may be jesting.

Wiggo was already OBE'd (2004 Olympics) & CBE'd (2008 Olympics) & the next gong up is knighted, and all of the 2012 Team GB Olympic Gold medallists were automatically given the next gong up, even if he hadnt won the tour that year he'd probably still have been made Sir.0 -
Wiggo's achievement is unique and will remain so for ever, he's the first Brit to win cycling's most prestigious prize. I suspect Froome will be knighted if he wins another Tour.0

What about the Belgian born, son of an Aussie Wiggins is more British than Froome? His accent?0 -

Was only half tongue in cheek. There is a big difference between being British and being eligible to represent GB.0 -

Froome is a bit like Zola Budd then... along with a similar upper body and a tendency to fall over in a big race
Oh, and yes I know Froome has British parents. I still find it puzzling when people count him as British as even he says he considers South Africa his home and he even has the Kenyan flag on his bikes. I like the chap but why on earth doesn't he change his race license from British? Does anyone know? Maybe I need to read his book I have just been given.0 -

It is covered pretty well in his book, but basically he wasn't happy happy with the way he and his cycling mates in Kenya were treated by the Kenyan cycling authorities so he opted to ride under GB flag when he was given the opportunity0 -
And what is the difference?
I am sure Kevin Pietersen does not call himself English.
Has Froome ever lived in the UK?0 -

Good point (as a staunch republican I tend to shut my eyes and ears to such things) but what is the point of being a knight and not being called Sir?0 -
am i the only one who thinks this is all a bit of a nonsense?
i mean, who the xxxx would want to be a called a SIR or a Knight? or have OBE after their name?
do they give you a big sword and white horse? and send you off to Palestine to kill Muslims? if so, was Blair knighted?
Do other countries knight cyclists? and more to the point, what happens if these cyclists get found to have used PEDs ? not an unlikely scenario! - can a knight be unknighted? or an OBE be ex OBE ed ?
are they beheaded or locked in the Tower?0 -
Of course it's nonsense - all honours and awards are. Some of those that have them are slightly embarrassed by them*, some of them that have them like to primp and preen with them, and some turn them down.
Not sure about other countries and how they work, but the Dutch, Belgians and I think French still have a similar order of knights/chevaliers. Perhaps someone can let us know how many Dutch pro-cyclists have a gong.
*BTW, I have never met someone who has a gong and is even slightly embarrassed about it.Ecrasez l’infame0 -
A nonsense and embarrassment. All linked to a system of governance topped by a hereditary monarchy... All very 21st century. In his book Wiggins says he accepted his as it is what his grandfather would have wanted. I lose respect for anybody who accepts them.. The bowing and scraping in just degrading.0

err, I beg to differ. My mum got an MBE after a lifetime of selfless help for a charity (a local hospice). My mum is a avid royalist whereas I am a staunch republican...but it was still one of my proudest days to accompany her to the palace to pick up the award0 -

Could well be true.
I always thought it was stupid to give people awards whilst they are still competing.
I looked into nominating someone for an award on their retirement, but they still have to be active in the field for which they are nominated (services to charity etc) in order to be eligible.0 -

it only seems a huge jump as we have a medieval system of government  The honours are awarded by the Queen, as such the loss of "honours" would seem a small price to pay for abolition of the monarchy (and house of Lords)0 -
