recovery time from torn MCL?

I'm gutted. I have been plagued with a persistent knee injury for months. The original diagnosis was Pes anserinus, aka Goose foot - an injury apparently common with cyclists caused by over training . I have had physio for a few months but progress seemed very slow (just wasn't improving). Then, whilst at physio, about 4 weeks ago something went pop. There was no visible swelling but the knee felt very unstable, although the sharp pain quickly subsided. Since then i have had a persistent dull ache and the constant feeling that the knee is not stable.
Finally had the scan results - torn MCL and cartilage damage. Will need surgery as the MCL has detached from the tibia.
I'm absolutely gutted. God knows how long i will have to wait for the op and i had so much planned for 2016
This said, i guess the only way to look at this is i have overtrained (will be learning from that mistake!!) and so this is a chance for my body to recover - at least that's what i'm telling myself.
Just wondering if any one has suffered similar? How long was the recovery time after the op? How does the knee feel post op?
Thanks & happy xmas to all!

Sorry to hear that. I had a partial, grade 2 MCL tear and was off the bike for around 6-7 weeks before riding again. No idea with a fully ruptured MCL, but unlikely to be any less than that from time of op.0

Thanks mate. I'm gutted, although guess i don't have to stress about waiting for my new canyon now
How did your tear yours? Was it on the bike?
All i have been told is the orthopedic surgeon will explain the procedure and the recovery steps. Have read up online but the recovery time is vague. Guess it depends on the individual.0 -

Dunno about 'on the bike' - more like 'falling off it'..
Fell awkwardly on a descent on the MTB. Back to full strength again now though - hopefully yours will heal quickly.0 -
I tore the MCL in both knees playing football when I was 16 which was about 11 years ago. I struggle to remember length of time I was out but I remember it not improving on its own but as soon as I started seeing a physio and getting ultrasound on it, it started improving quite quickly. Never had a problem since.0

Apologies to the OP - Imposter and I are carrying on from innumerable previous threads about training. I'll not give you the various keywords, as it might attract the moths to the flame, and I'm not sure I have the energy after Christmas lunch...0
