Yep. That's the chap. His next operation is apparently 1 in 500 success I think. He could wake up from surgery and be totally paralysed and on a ventilator for rest of life. He is in great pain permanently but still thinks that he is fortunate compared to others.

There was a programme on a few months ago called "Dead Man Cycling". It was about David Smith's attempt to cycle up Ventoux three times in 24hrs.
Incredible story. Totally humbled by it.

Why would anyone take an operation if there was 0.2% of success?

Why would anyone take an operation if there was 0.2% of success?

50/50 is a big gamble so 500 to 1 against must be a mistake
