Pain in upper shoulder / neck

Apologies if this has been asked before but my search skills have failed me in turning up anything useful.

Closest thing I found was this:

Basic issue is that I develop a sharp pain in my left upper shoulder / lower neck (I think in the trapezius or Splenius Capitis muscle) after a couple of hours riding. This gets worse as a ride goes on and abates afterwards but over the season it builds so that it is sore all the time.

Background: I do around 10-12 hours a week on the bike and have done for around 4 years (mix of 1.5 hr midweek rides and longer ones on weekend). FTP hovers between 280 & 300 and around 4 w/kg. I don't race much as I tend to do overseas gran fondos as my main targets each year so I end up doing a lot of 5+ hr rides. I'm right handed and always eat / drink with my right hand in case that has any bearing.

I have been for 3 bike fits (one at a chap recommended very highly on this forum), changed frame from a 58 to a 56 with more "endurance" geometry (as I have long legs and short torso), been to a physio and my GP but nothing has resolved it. Some neck stretches on the bike have helped stave off the feeling for a few hours but it always eventually arises, always on the left side (not had any problems at all with the right).

It is probably just the muscle fatiguing from keeping my head up and looking forward but thought I would see if anyone else has experienced this and if so if they managed to resolve it.

Any advice much appreciated!

  • I would have thought this is most likely a posture problem.

Go and see Helen at Ten Point in Amersham. I had a similar issue that annoyed me for years and she sorted it in minutes.
