I'm not convinced there is anyone helping him DB.It's not like doping in the 90's. Ordering EPO on line is just like ordering any health supplement or a pair of trainers. Go on YouTube and you'll even find videos of how to inject it.
TBH it debunks the myth that there is some super hierarchy out there supplying drugs to cycling that everyone who gets busted is covering up for. Actually its far Eastern pharmaceutical companies that give as much of a sh1t about cycling as they do hangliding. There is no Ferrari, Fuentes or Motoman just a laptop and a credit card0 -

Well no. Surely anyone being rational about it would work out if it takes dope to get a pro contract you're going to be a rubbish pro.0 -

Not necessarily. It depends upon what level you are operating. JTL was sitting pretty at Endura but it appears to have been his leap up to WT and the more intense scrutiny at Sky and their comparison of his figures which was his undoing. If he'd have stayed in the lower tiers would the discrepancy have come to light? probably not0 -
Cycling's history isn't the same as many sports. Golf, Cricket, Rugby, Football and others were brought out of the Public School system where they were for our young well heeled men and were taught the values of good sportsmanship and fair play. Cycling comes out of publicity for Newspapers and Business to promote their brand. Races used to be a bunch of individuals who tried to make a living from winning bike races and primes. This was thought better than working on the land or in the mines where the living was even harder. Winning at any cost was the way, as riders lived hand to mouth trying to eke out a living. This is where catching Trains was a good thing. So... cycling's history doesn't come out of fair play and following the rules. The winning was and still is key to our sport. It's about getting across the line first so the sponsor gets it's bang for it's buck. It's hard business.
As for this Kid, then if he's doping at this age then he's got no hope. What will he use if he progressed? He's maxed out already.
I have wondered about a UK rider who rode for USPS many moons ago where he was a dominant force in the Under 23s and didn't come to much in the top ranks. I would assume that he might have been maxed out as an under 23 rider and then couldn't improve so didn't fulfil his "so called" potential.
I knew someone who did very well with an oxygen tent. I always thought an oxygen tent was much better value then a new £8k bike to be honest.“Life is like riding a bicycle. To keep your balance you must keep moving”- Albert Einstein

His undoing was exactly as Rick posits. He doped to get there. Then stopped. Then wasn't good enough."In many ways, my story was that of a raging, Christ-like figure who hauled himself off the cross, looked up at the Romans with blood in his eyes and said 'My turn, sock cookers'"

Yeas that's what he did but he could probably have continued his doping at Endura where he was a pro albeit in the lower ranks and on less money and quite possibly have remained undetected,
My point is as long as you don't get to greedy you can probably enjoy a small time pro career in the lower pro ranks where testing is targetted. again if JTL hadn't got greedy and gone to Sky would he have been discovered?0 -
There's absolutely no money in that however.
It's peanuts. So you'd risk doping to earn peanuts?
That's not rational behaviour.0 -

He was supposedly on £20k at Endura, even less at Rapha Condor (£12k). Both figures as per Colin Lewis, in an interview with Ned Boulting that I was at in 2012.
Sky ponied up 400k for his annual salary - allegedly

I want his agent. On that scale, I must be worth at least 100K a year. I mean I wouldn't finish any of the one day races or be seen anywhere near the front of the bunch either."In many ways, my story was that of a raging, Christ-like figure who hauled himself off the cross, looked up at the Romans with blood in his eyes and said 'My turn, sock cookers'"

Any idea what some of the riders are earning in South East Asia? I'm wondering whether that is a more lucrative place to ride out of the spotlight0 -

I am not saying that I agree, but I am not in the slightest bit surprised by this.
I race against quite a lot of first year belofte and the pressure on them is massive. Half the time it is just like a school play ground. Bullying, making fun of each other. Only takes a weaker person to break down from all this. I have witnessed people quitting because of the peer pressure they receive, saying it is down to injury etc. When it wasnt that, it was the pressure put on them.
These things are so accessible. You are emotionally broken, why wouldnt you try it?
I am certain they are not thinking clearly about the risks of getting caught. Maybe there are others getting away with it, so its easier for them to justify.
Its not only in cycling, its the world of sport (money) that has been created.
Again, I am not saying its right at all.
The JTL example from above. 20k a year or 400k a year? Even if you got busted after 6 months, thats the same money as 10 years at Conti level.Scott Addict 2011

It's George Watson, and is the sort of school background that would see a Tory cabinet minister called 'Oiky'. My parents chose to have me state educated and even I get to look down my nose at the people who went there.
edit: and the fud who wrote Flower of Scotland went to Gordonstoun. Nothing screams 'establishment' like writing the national anthem.Team My Man 2018: David gaudu, Pierre Latour, Romain Bardet, Thibaut pinot, Alexandre Geniez, Florian Senechal, Warren Barguil, Benoit Cosnefroy0 -

What is this pressure though, it's an amateur sport with very little money in it unless you are exceptionally good in which case you are probably already on BCs radar by the time you are that age. This is what I don't get about youth cycling - from the outside it just doesn't look like a lot of fun ![Castle Donington Ladies FC - going up in '22]0 -
You ve never been mooching around a bike shop and hears the two shop boys spouting off about how they re going to get their W/kg up by next year??
Any group of young men are going to be competitive. A person's self worth being defined by their position in their own social heirachy is nothing new DeV
I should ceed the floor to AtC on this now thoughWe're in danger of confusing passion with incompetence
- @ddraver0 -
Yes self induced pressure from being naturally competitive. I just get the impression young riders have additional external pressure. Coaches, teams, trying to make the Bc squad, the regional squad, become a pro. The level of taking it all very seriously seems to go deeper than it needs to and Mark's quotes about junior racing wouldn't entice anyone thinking about taking up the sport to have a go.[Castle Donington Ladies FC - going up in '22]0
