  • Are you looking at the XC50 or the XC50N?

"Off-road shoes with sealed uppers for race-level performance all year round. The XC50N adds all weather protection to the superb XC50 feature set, giving you the same comfortable and dependable riding experience in all conditions."

I have wide feet, so it fits me just right!

I was looking at the XC50N but the two panels at the front looked like they might be mesh which is why I asked. Presumably they are not and are just filled in? If so, I might consider a pair of these.

    They're "carbon weave effect." :D

I have these for commuting. Great shoes.

Yes - filled in with a surface made to look like raw carbon fibre.

Awesome shoes and last well too.

Well I opted for the fancy Mavics. Not sure the fit is the best but then they are much stiffer than my Fizik R1s of course due to the protection. Have to really pull the velcro cuff round and I'm sure water is going to come in here. Bit of heel lift, the boa doesn't seem to go tight enough although I have gone up a half size so that could be it. I think Northwaves would be a better fit for me but not seen any fir less than the Mavics (£120) Build quality seems great and the look the dogs. Am I keeping them ? Dunno yet. I'll wear them round the house a bit rather that at my desk and see.

  • I've started using Specialized Defroster, good price here if you are happy to use spd's:-

  • you will need guards and especially bib longs that go outside the top of the boot. Wear them like that and the sock will suck the water down into it.

i used my specialized defrosters in the cold today for the first time. i've also worn them in the rain a few times. i have to say they are fantastic, far better than shoes and overshoes and a lot more than i expected.

  • I'm considering a pair of winter boots too and most of the ones I've been looking at are for use with SPD pedals. I'm used to Look Keos and am wondering how those of you who use both types cope with them - summer shoes with Looks or equivalent, winter shoes with SPDs?

The Crono Artica's are available in road or MTB sole, so choosing the road sole means you can fit all sorts of road cleats, KEO included

For anyone looking for a low budget option for dry\warm (in relative terms)

1 pair of wolley bolley socks (£15 approx)
    1 pair planet x overshoes (£15 approx)

Kept me dry and warm a couple of weekends back !
