Specifically, traditional foes - US, Western Europe etc.
Putin is under pressure, a lot of it because of sanctions and it was suggested by John Simpson that forming alliances with France, the UK and the US in bombing ISIS would go some way to alleviating that pressure.
I am pretty sure that the he is fully aware of the fact that the West has no real determination, appetite or motivation to remove Assad other than lip service.
It was ISIS after all that shot the charter plane down and he was furious.
His control of Crimea is essential strategically and he sees the Ukraine as a threat to that vantage. Now he is pre-occupied with Syria, maybe the Ukraine will receive less Russian military aggression and calm down a little.seanoconn - gruagach craic!0 -

And how about MH17 shot down by pro-Russian insurgents?
Curious to know how Ukraine is a threat to Russia sounds like he wants it to be a post Yugoslavia.
