40th birthday gift...

So, been given £250 for my upcoming 40th by my mum. Looking for ideas on what to spend it on. Only stipulation is that it would be nice to get something memorable & long lasting rather than say, a tool set or something
I have a lot of the usual cycling stuff, which is why I'm struggling a bit for inspiration.
This is your chance to keep the investment in the cycling community....

Flight to the Alps in the summer0

The Rapha onesie mentioned on this thread perhaps:

A carbon stem? You could save 8g and ponder on every ride for years to come where the extra £200 went:

Seriously though, now you mention it, tools are probably the only thing that you hang onto these days for a long time. That or maybe a top-end helmet? Treat yourself to a Synthe or Protone?
Or how about hang onto the £250 for a year or two and buy a power meter as the price continues to drop?0 -
5 x Rapha Essentials Cases?
That would be memorable, but not in a good way.....0 -
Definitely think about putting it towards a trip. A few days climbing the famous climbs in the Alps or Pyrenees will create memories that will last forever and certainly will mean more than looking back at that time you bought a new pair of wheels (or whatever).
If the mountains don't appeal, then a mini tour somewhere like Normandy or Brittany can be done cheaply (especially if you camp), eating good food and wine. Maybe for the Grand Departe of The Tour for added interest and fun?
I used some money from my folks for my 40th for exactly this sort of trip and spent a few days in the Pyrenees climbing tourmalet, col d'Aubisque etc. - I will remember that time forever.0 -
I took my brother to Lille for his 40th, managed to ride Paris Roubaix on the Saturday and watch the pro race on the Sunday. Hotels and transport were pretty cheap, I reckon that trip came in at under £250 a head.0

Yeah, the trip idea is a good one alright, need to see if I can make that fly (literally) with my (very) non-cycling good lady....0

It's amazing how many cycle trips are blocked for this reason, but it's actually quite simple. You jus have to go somewhere that they like too, where they can amuse themselves as well.
Palma springs to mind, but there is also Barcelona, Nice, etc.0 -
This tool set is quite wonderful
http://silca.cc/collections/all-silca/products/hx-one-home-and-travel-essentials
so is climbing Col de la Madeleine and Col du Galibier..0 -
Think I'd spend the money on something nice for my motherI'm sorry you don't believe in miracles0

Or better still, go on your own!0 -

Campag corkscrew.Insert bike here:0

I go along with something that, when your mum has gone will be a lifelong memory...ask the boss for some more cash...add it all together..a nice wrist watch..something that every time you see/look at it it reminds you of what the important things are..a top end helmet/garmin..even a trip cant outlast a keepsake0

If you have to ask strangers what to get as a personal and memorable gift, and are struggling to spend the money, I would get some premium bonds.
You may win big and you can always cash them in when you think of a suitable use.
I am not sure you can really do what you want within cycling.
How about spending the money on something non cycling instead?0 -
Something memorable and long lasting...
A tattoo?0 -
OK, I know you said no tool sets, but this is a rather special tool and you would never need to buy another track pump:

Only justifiable as an indulgence of course, but what are birthdays for?

That track pump ticks all the boxes (apart from being over budget)
Cycling, Something you would probably never buy yourself but would love as a gift, stunning quality that will be enjoyed every time you use it, and will be used regularly during your cycling lifetime (which could easily be another 40 years).
Maybe tell them your story and see if they will do a deal for pick up from store.0 -

Catch yourself on....
Do something decent with the ££££
A trip that you wouldn't ordinarily contemplate - everyone has (or should have) a track pump, but £300!!! Not a chance.....0 -
If you use your track pump every other day for the rest of your life, couldn't it be worth £300 for the right one? (not necessarily saying that this is the right one, but it has a good chance of being an extremely good one).
Think of all of those thousands of 30 seconds, which could potentially be either thousands of slightly annoying moments fiddling with something that never quite works perfectly or thousands of satisfying moments using a well designed and perfectly functioning tool that feels nice to use. Also, if you use cheap track pumps you'll probably end up buying several over the course of a lifetime and the combined cost might be similar to the expensive one.
That said, I'm very happy with my Lezyne Alloy Floor Drive which is very good quality and a sixth of the cost..0 -
Thanks for all the suggestions so far, the good and the...well....thanks anyway
Much as I can see what you mean, I think a £300 pump would make me feel nauseous everytime I looked at it, I can see my £30 joe blow lasting for another 10 years anyhoo
Maybe thinking about something in the wall art area, as it happens just moved into a new place, this would be a good way to get some cycling art into the house :P0 -

Hmmm...like that print a lot! Actually I have already snuck 1 cycling art work into the house...

It says goes up to 160psi. But then it looks like the minimum pressure is around 100...????BikeRadar Communities Manager0 -

Yellow gauge is a low pressure pump (0-60psi), red gauge is standard 0-160.
160psi is about 11 bar. (Shows how good we are at conversions  )BikeRadar Communities Manager0 -
So you need 2 x £300 pumps. One for the roadie and one for the MTB. Wow! :shock:0

I think we can safely say the OP isn't going to get the 300 quid pump(s). Or probably anyone else for that matter whose first name isn't Sheikh.0
