And you really think that the sole reason they don't last longer is some pact by manufacturers to keep making them wear out? Think your tinfoil hat may need some adjusting.0

Pact ? No its standard engineering practice to use the lowest quality parts they can get away with. What they can get away with is what the market will accept as reasonable use. Making ( near) ever lasting machinery means no one buys a new one. Plus every replacement component someone buys increases the profit they make on that unit( initial sale)
You make the point yourself, that your road bike has( and is still going) done 10 times the distance on a BB, clearly the tech is available and clearly they consider mountain bikers more gullible than road bikers0 -
The only difference between Shimano MTB and road BBs is the depth of the thread.I don't do smileys.

Correct. And with many BBs they're no different whatsoever. Indeed my MTB actually had a road BB fitted. Well it's had 3 of them.0

That may be the only visual difference, unless you can tell grade of steel and manufacturing tolerance by eye ?0 -

So why do they last 10 times longer in you road bike then ?0 -

No mate your giving( ill informed) opinions
Go on, explain how you have assess the relative manufacturing tolerances between a road BB and a MTB BB. If you can do that I might accept that your telling me ''what is ?0 -
Shimano somewhat do it for us - it's called a range.0

And btw, please stay around brian, we like your (that's in the correct sense) type.0

Because the road bike doesn't get ridden through mud and shit. It doesn't get washed at often. It gets an easier life in use. You're the one saying road BBs are better quality because mountain bikers are gullible, what's your reason?0 -
Road BBs are better because mountain bikers are gullible so they accept lower quality stuff because they are gullible because they accept lower quality stuff. Or something.
Not circular reasoning at all.I don't do smileys.

An old work colleague used to prepare cars for the Mobil economy tours back in the 1980's, they used to empty the wheels bearings of grease and use a light oil which would cope fine with the light loads and short duration of the tour (about 700-800 miles) reckoned it was worth about 1.5mpg on a Metro 1.0 (ave 60mpg on the tour), so reasonably significant.Currently riding a Whyte T130C, X0 drivetrain, Magura Trail brakes converted to mixed wheel size (homebuilt wheels) with 140mm Fox 34 Rhythm and RP23 suspension. 12.2Kg.0

I just removed an old BB from my hard tail - a external bearing hollowtech 2 - non drive side pretty well seized drive side OK. Might pull them apart to see whats inside for curiosity. But its been on the bike 2 years with little care or maintenance so I am not planning to write to Shimano for a new one.Closet jockey wheel pimp whore.0

Sod all inside HT2 cups - a plastic top hat seal and a cartridge bearing.0

There are places that will replace the cartridge bearing in an HT2 cup for not much money.....Currently riding a Whyte T130C, X0 drivetrain, Magura Trail brakes converted to mixed wheel size (homebuilt wheels) with 140mm Fox 34 Rhythm and RP23 suspension. 12.2Kg.0
