How should I train for racing?

Hi all,

I would love to have a go at some racing next year, but I'm stuck as to how I should approach the training.

Is it worth doing weighted squats in combination with interval training? Someone said to me that I should solely focus on base miles and squats/core strength exercises in between.

What sort of sessions should I be looking at doing and in what quantity?

All advice/help would be appreciated :)

BTW I don't have a power meter.
