Hand pain - any ideas please?

Been riding for years and not had this problem before.

Just taken delivery of a new bike, did a short ride yesterday (hour and a half with a long stop) and today was out for just over 3 hours. Was in absolute agony for the last 5 miles or so today, pain at the base of my left palm, fairly central and couldn't find a comfortable way to hold the bars.

Normally I'd expect this to be because of bars too low causing too much weight on the hands but if anything the position on this new bike is more upright than my others so I'm struggling to think of a possible cause. Any ideas please?

Difference in bar tape perhaps?
