Looking for a bit of advice on a new turbo trainer. I have being using a cheap old turbo trainer for the last few winters. But looking to train a bit harder this winter. Is it worth but one with a electric motor that will adjust the resistance? Which will I think might push me harder.
My budget is around £300

Yes certainly, the likes of the smart trainers do make a big difference in being able to adjust the resistance for you. e.g. if you want to do 200W you set it to 200W and then it takes care of the settings for you. Works well with the likes of trainer road (I'm going to post about that in the trainer road thread)
The Tacx Vortex Smart is bang on your budget http://www.wiggle.co.uk/tacx-vortex-smart-trainer/0 -
Thanks for that, I have being looking at them. I think I'll go for one and hopeful it will help push me that bit further.0

Just look up trainerroad. You dont need a fancy pants expensive turbo. You need something that will get you motivated.
You do the work = not the turbo.0 -

Ultimately yes, but the better turbos allow you to concentrate on the work at hand, not worry about adjusting resistance / gears etc.0 -

I see what your saying there. Do you have any suggestions on a turbo trainer then? I take it fuild ones are better?0 -

Yes the Tacx Vortex linked earlier. I would only get a fluid trainer if you already have a power meter otherwise the vortex makes a decent attempt at power estimation through ANT+0 -
I think the adjustment aspect is way down the list of features imo. I have a Tacx Flow and barely ever adjust the "slope". Even when I do it might be to just move it up 1 level, anything more than that and the feel of it is terrible. I also really struggle to get the power down on it when really pushing, 350W seems more like 550W because it's just not good at responding to that level, it's clunky and the smoothness just disappears. Below around 320W it's pretty good, anymore and its crap.
I'd say forget the features and get something that has the best feel, I believe Lemond are good for this.

Had a cycleops magneto for three years and never let me down. Moved half way across the planet so didn't bother lugging it with me and now use a Kirt Kinetic rock and roll. I bought the RnR as it was half price, I would go for the road machine otherwise.
Anyway KK is a bit smother, but they're all equally good at making me vomit.0
