This is part of an excellent Steve Cummings article in Pro Cycling..
quite refreshing perspective and tbh not many of us would not want to be able to match even a 1/4 of what that guy can do... here is his thoughts on training..
Ok you don't have to have the tech.. power meter to make hitting targets more precise and repeatable, but you do have to have a basic understanding of what your 'threshold' feels like..(if you don't what are you doing even training..?) and you have to have read around the subject to make sense of the descriptions and finally unlike golf, it is hard work.

There's always someone doing something a bit different, but it's an exception, not a rule. Thomas Voeckler doesn't use HRM or PM. Should we all just train and ride on feel? There's a reason it's an exception.0

Pros are generally good despite their training.
Training need not be complex, but what makes sense for any individual will be specific for them.0 -
What is simple about what he is doing?
re read it, he is doing a heck of alot, with a lot of thought put into it.0 -

Agreed - if that's 'simple', I would love to see his idea of a 'complex' program...0 -
Probably not hard to understand his sessions - I note he's not giving much away there - why would you...
But to have the dedication to repeatedly do them at the intensities you need. Thats the secret.0 -
I'll read it again.. it is simple.. some of you need to declutter your minds maybe.0
